everyone's waiting for me to be brilliant while you're slipping through my hands- michael ledbetter

About Me

I come from the land that brought w.c. handy into this world and shed light on numerous rock and soul groups of the late 70's. a place with a rich musical heritage often overshadowed by the inability to adapt and move on insisting on living in the greatness of its local past. its also ironically, or not, the birthplace of helen keller and the story of a struggle of someone who cant hear music, let alone anything. a town where everyone knows everyone and weddings are planned around football season. a place where summertime weather is not uncommon to spend days in a row well above 100 degrees with humidity well over 90 percent. a place well-equipped with an arsenal of churches and gas stations and a nice inventory of red lights, located right in the buckle of the bible belt. it is the shoals area of alabama, namely florence (actual birthplace and majority of my life on earth) and musically, muscle shoals. a place where the water truly does possess some sort of mysterious power in the way people play music. lots and lots of excellent musicians and songwriters have emerged and are continuing to emerge from that area. an area mentioned in great detail by stellar musical stars of the past and present. an area that does pride itself in producing "music" and "a great place to be from". as for me personally, i play the trumpet in a style strongly influenced by galactic saxophonist ben ellman and the gamble brothers band saxophonist art edmaiston in that i love to incorporate different effects pedals to raise the level of curiosity. and of course being a trumpet player in that style, it would be ridiculous if i didnt consider miles davis to be a strong influence as well. i also play keyboards in a style influenced by a mixture of pink floyd's richard wright with a touch of trip-hop piano(portishead) as well as turn it around and feel influence from john medeski of MMW. i can also sing but would much rather prefer to apply harmony vocals. i pride myself on musical discipline as far as attitude as well as dynamic control; you dont have to play a lot of notes and you dont have to play loud all the time. (one of the reasons miles davis was brilliant was that he was able to say "in two notes" what other guys took "twelve notes" to say). i can doodle a bit on guitar and bass but prefer to stick with the trumpet and keyboard. ive been fortunate enough to play with numerous groups along the way including: the dead parrot society, ooocoolie, gulliver, fritz pizitz, lebetter,...even the moon, the essential blend, the apollo program, scatfish, and even a brief stint with the boys from the fiddleworms. all of these groups, in their own respective way, have made me the musician i am today. i still continue to play with ledbetter whenever possible and have currently began playing with a band in nashville called 'the zone', which is essentially a funk band. i've made incredible acquaintances and friends through the power of music and am looking forward to continuing that trend. i have a superb sense of humor and am extremely easy to get along with. i enjoy having a beer (frequently) and love going to hear live music and expand my musical horizons. in october of 2007 i moved to lavergne, tennessee which is about 20 miles outside of nashville. i greatly miss my family and friends, and especially my older brother who lives in birmingham, but at the same time im pursuing a life-long dream in music city. i can play funk, i can jam, and i can play pretty; just point me toward the stage and give me my toys.

Gooch, my grandad, who was a hell-of-a man, a world war 2 veteran as well...R.I.P....;Miles Davis for pushing the boundaries of music over and over again; and Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel because he's the guy that always goes 'to the hurricanes'; and last but not least, "to be determined"- this is for the guy that comes up with an alternative to gasoline. and this guy:
