About Me

I'm aussie-born, christian, and into music. I play and teach several instruments but my main instruments are electric bass and jazz double bass.
I'm in several bands: Firstly a guitar duo with my singer/guitarist Nic and myself on bass and backing vocals. We can also play as a four-piece when we add drummer and lead guitarist. We sing covers like "3am" and "Brown eyed girl" in pubs, and it's quite fun.
I'm also in the 80s flashback and I really love gigging with this band! We dress up and do "80s Top 40" covers in private functions and pubs.

My favourite band of all is Happenstance . We have dozens of gig-ready original songs and more in the pipeline, and abour a year of gigging experience around the Sydney indie scene. I'm open to advice as to who else we sound like. My guess is "Crowded House but with Overdrive" influenced by Queen, Ben Folds and The Whitlams, using story-based songs with both feeling and humour, plus decent 3-part male vocal harmony on many of them.

In addition to these bands I play freelance jazz, and assemble a different band pretty much every time I play. I love how jazz performances are so different every time. Every wednesday night I play at the Hawkesbury Jazz Club (Richmond NSW, msg me if you want to come, it's free) to keep in practice and hang with some dear friends.

I also compose music. "Chamber music" I guess I could call it. One of the the tunes you can hear on this site at the moment is a composition assignment for uni. Another, Faces, is an incomplete jazz tune (there are more sections, and solos, when it is played live) and the other, Drums, is an old joke that I recorded as a recording assignment for uni. My pop tunes won't be on this Space since they're going on the Happenstance space.

I'm 35 now and used to work as an electrical engineer, but quit that to do a music degree at the University of Western Sydney from 03 to 05. Now I keep food on the table by teaching and playing. Yeah, it's a bit of a step down in pay but I'm loving my life and have more time for friends, which is very important to me.

I'm at a local Anglican church at the moment and love my friends from there. They've carried me through some rough times and I enjoy returning the favour when I can.

I'm a big fan of laughter and fun, particularly lounging by a warm fire with a glass of red and some good company.

I have the best girlfriend in the world. Her name is Anne.

Something I'm not into is the kind of sense of humour that always needs a victim. I prefer to laugh "with" somebody than "at" anytime, although I do like when people have a bit of a sense of mischief too. I respect people who always think of others when making decisions, for example some good friends of mine who are overseas on a christian mission (Hi Jay and Leng, Simon and Isaac!).

Drop me a message if you want to be friends who actually communicate, but please don't try and add me if you're selling porn or "live webcam," or if you are planning to spam me. :) Cheers!

Lockdown 4

It's lockdown time again, and that means that a holiday house near a beach somewhere will be the location for a serious 5 day songwriting effort. It also means I won't be answering emails/comments/mes...

Slay

I play Slay. Slay is a tiny windows game, a turn-based strategy. Kind of chess-like but less rules and different maps to play. There's a free demo (1 level) which gets a bit dull eventually but I lear...

It worked!

On advice from Karl Valentine, who years ago worked at Country Brewer in Penrith NSW, I've brewed a strawberry wheat beer. It's been carbonating in a keg the last few days and is now drinkable (I expe...

Creeped out by a computer game

I've felt a bit creeped out by computer games before today, but this was a new feeling. Examples of games (well, free game demos) which creeped me out previously are Doom and Doom 3, because they were...

Where will all the Emo's go, come summer?

First up, I must admit to being a mite confused about this whole Emo thing. This is more of a rant than much else. But it's plagued me for a while that if all these kids like to wear dark colours and ...

Why I am excited

So yeah our band's little gig went really well last week and a good mate Jeremy called up and offered us a slot in a band night at the Hopetoun. We've ditched the old name BNDA at last and will be ab...
