First and foremost, P. Lawton prefers not to be categorized as just a rapper. He boldly states: "I'm a writer who happens to know how to rap". Born Jerry Medcalf, he began writing short stories and poems when his 2nd grade teacher discovered his gift. A year later, a gang from California migrated to the Laclede Town Apartments, so his mother moved him to the suburbs of Houston, TX. In H-Town he began writing rhymes so advanced for his age that even the adults took notice. Unfortunately, family matters led him back to St. Louis, when he was 13, and he went through a culture shock. Most of his old friends were living the street life already, while Pac was more concerned with scoring touchdowns and making honor roll. Though innocent at first, his love for the neighborhood and "guilt by association" gave him a jacket he has since had trouble taking off. Despite his knack for dominating ciphers, he initially had no intentions of becoming a rapper. It was just a hobby, but people encouraged him to pursue it long term. No one else could make them listen, dance, laugh, get emotional, and think. Slowly he gained street fame going to 4 different high schools, running the streets, and hitting open MICS around town. He started recording in the late 90z but shady dealings with local labels, and even shadier contract ones with majors, killed his desire to be a rapper. Attorney Joycelyn Hill gave him the game on the music business and pointed him towards books and resources that would teach him about the industry. In 2003, switched his focus to writing for magazines and by 2005 he was interviewing and rubbing elbows with big shots. His inside connections encouraged him to give recording another shot and it only took one song for people start asking when his CD was dropping. While most artists try to push music they hope the streets want, Pac-Man is just giving the people what they've been asking for. He boldly states: "You won't find many novelists or poets, not to mention emcees, who put words together quite like I do. I'm used to having my work critiqued to a 'T', plus my sound is universal and the hood is lovin me." As co-founder and Director of Sales for FreQBeatz Productions, with his cousin Fedarro, Pac generated 6 figures for the website in 9 months leasing and selling tracks. He's currently, working on his St. Louis Bloc Xchange mixtape series and writing songs and bios for various artists. If "Weird Science" were a hip-hop film, then Pac-Man Lawton would have been the prototype. Pac considers himself to be and asset to any record company as an artist or executive because of his extensive knowledge of various aspects the game.
