Athletics, specifically endurance events, have always been a part of my life. I was a fairly accomplished distance runner in high school and college. My buddy Tim Rooker and I once ran around our high school for 9 hours straight to raise money for a local charity. I continued to enjoy success as a runner, winning several local and regional road races.I became Davenport Police Officer in 1981. Over the next 10 years I helped establish the Emergency Services Team (SWAT) and founded the Iowa Chapter of the Midwest Gang Investigators Association, serving as President for 3 years. I was honored to serve with some of the most courageous men and women in law enforcement. I continued to train hard, but now included biking as part of my daily regime. In 1991, while in route to fuel my police cruiser, I was struck broadside on the driver’s side door by a vehicle that had run a red light, traveling at over 80 miles per hour. I sustained life threatening injuries, and without the tremendous effort of the Davenport Police and Fire crews that responded, I surely would have died. The injuries cut short my career as a police officer, but after 5 major surgeries, I once again found myself out training. All of compassionate and wonderfully talented physicians that put me back together agreed that my level of fitness at the time of the accident was a key element in my survival.I first became aware of Adventure Racing in 1995. I happened upon an article in about this crazy multi-day co-ed race called The Raid Gauloise. Then came Eco-Challenge. (Click off the awesome tune to hear the audio)To say I was hooked would be huge understatement. I began studying and training for the various disciplines - hoping for the chance to someday participate in an epic event. The formation of High Profile Adventure Racing (www.teamhighprofile.com) gave my dream its legs. We have been fortunate to have raced all over the United States and Canada. Our team, in its various configurations, have enjoyed a lot of success and some frightening moments while racing, but all of the hard work and planning paid off --The 2006 Primal Quest in Utah (www.ecoprimalquest.com)What I quickly learned during these life changing experiences is that the most rewarding part of Adventure Racing is not the fitness level or the application of skills. It is the gift of respect, spirit, and love that one develops for his teammates as we push ourselves to the very limits of human endurance.Adventure Racing, for us, is life.
