Stem’s most recent piece, Revisited, was premiered by the Cadillac Moon Ensemble in New York at the Gershwin Hotel. Since Japanese shakuhachi music is at the center of the entire work (especially the last two movements which quote music from two shakuhachi pieces, San’an and Zangetsu), Revisited focuses a lot of attention on techniques/ideas frequently heard in shakuhachi music, such as pitch bending, timbral changes on single pitches, pentatonic scales, and an organic rhythmic pulse. The only difference is that the composer “revisits†the music once again, integrating different musical styles within the piece to produce a work that serves as a different reflection of an old Japanese musical tradition.
LATEST PERFORMANCE!
The CME will perform Revisited this Sunday, 5/24, 5pm at Pianos in New York City.
The Cadillac Moon Ensemble will also record this work as part of an upcoming album release by New Dynamic Records in 2011. To learn more about The Cadillac Moon Ensemble, please visit their site at: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPro
