Male serial killers fall into one of four "types": (1) visionaries, who hear voices, receive godly commands, have a higher allegiance, pick up telepathic or psychic messages, have alter egos, or believe they are possessed by demons, spirits, or devils; (2) missionaries, who are evangelical about cleaning up society and target objects of discrimination -- prostitutes, drug addicts, homosexuals, racial minorities, and pornographers; (3) hedonists, who are usually power-oriented, and subdivided into lust killers, for which the act of raping and/or killing is a highly personal event (usually sexual) sometimes accompanied by overkill, necrophilia, or cannibalism; thrill killers, for which the act of torturing, raping, and/or killing is part of a desire for new and exciting thrills or kicks also sometimes accompanied by mutilation or cannibalism, but usually not overkill or necrophilia; and gain (or comfort) killers, for which raping and/or killing is part of a profitable business venture, advancement of career, or contract for services; and (4) power seekers, where other behaviors, such as ransom demands, desire for publicity, etc., indicate the dominant impulse is to have full control over life or death. There can be, of course, "mixed" types and cases where new subtypes have to be created. Some of the more unusual cases of vampirism and cannibalism may be "mixed" types.
