Where we were...
About 6 years ago, The Rocklobster was one of the most attended and influential venues in Long Island Music. It was "a place where bands went to grow up..." bands like Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, Brand New and many more have their roots in the rocklobster. The sound may not have been great, the environment may not be a classic rock club, but when the lights are down, the music is loud, and the room is packed full of happy, sober, loud teens, you really can't beat it. There was no stage, there was no drugs or alcohol. Just music, friends, and perhaps one of the best parties on long island EVERY MONTH.Where we are...
The recent dip in the Long Island music scene due to club owners' leaning toward cover bands, tribute bands, and DJs, too many similar sounding bands, and the new "purchase tickets to play" rule at most venues on the island, as well as the fact that most shows are 21+ these days, had brought the Rocklobster into severe hurt. for a long time, the same three bands performed month after month to smaller and smaller crowds. in the last few years, the booking and management of the event changed hands and has slowly been climbing. local bands get a chance to play in front of their friends, and the event is becoming something of a local phenomenon to the glen head/glen cove area, but that isn't enough. Now the lobster has a drum riser to increase the energy at shows, along with a MUCH better sound system with two subs and 24 channels in the mixer. A new lighting truss and backdrops for the stage area, but it's still the same event. the lights go down, the people crowd in, and the band is still on the same level as the crowd rocking WITH them, not at them. The goal is to pack the venue to capacity, 244 people, at EVERY show. We also want young bands to always have a chance to play, but not just to play for an empty room, to open up for established bands, to perform with their heroes. the more people come to the shows, the more money the event will generate and soon the Rocklobster will be able to bring in national acts to headline! often two stages are set up, so there is never a break in the music and there is always room for local young musicians!
