Black Star Sound

About Me

Black Star Sound Michelle, the Black Star Sound's organiser and manager, started listening to reggae when her older brother discovered it in the early 1980's. She immediately fell for the typical Jamaican heartbeat music. After her studies in geography and many travels, Michelle lived and worked in Ghana during 2002 and upon return to the Netherlands she founded Black Star Foundation, aimed at supporting and promoting African (reggae) artists..

Den-Den has always been involved with music and he has been dedicated to reggae since 1985. From 1993 Black Star Sound's selector and operator has been regularly spinning tunes in clubs and at parties. He took some time to develop and fine-tune his personal style and since 1998 Den-Den has solely used his skills to forward reggae and dancehall music.. .

2004 marked the start of Black Star Sound when Michelle returned to Ghana for the holidays, accompanied by Den-Den. Impressed by the local talent they picked Black Prophet, Osagyefo and Gold Teeth to voice the first ever Black Star dub plates. The Black Star Sound is one of the very few Dutch sounds, if not the only one, to record their own tunes over their own riddims. Black Star Sound supports all Black Star Foundation events and the sound is also often invited to support other parties and concerts. These sessions are oftentimes spiced up by the very talented Lady K-Wida and Brother Marcus on the microphone.

Black Star Sound plays on all the Black Star Foundation events. For example: Reggae on the Beach (Blijburg - Amsterdam), Bazart Bashment (Bazart - Den Haag), IJahman & Mighty Diamonds Live Concert (Melkweg - Amsterdam), Max Romeo Live Concert (Melkweg - Amsterdam), etc. And we are also invited frequently on other parties (check our agenda). An important aspect of Black Star Sound is that it donates all it's revenues to the Black Star Foundation, which employs all it's means to support and promote upcoming reggae artists.
