I am here for Friends

About Me

It is no surprise that people don't write more autobiographies. It is really hard to define who were are in one page, one sentence, or even an entire book. Our lives are a sum of our experiences and it is hard for anyone to take all of those experiences and boil them down to who we are.

So here goes...

I was born Shelby Mendiguren.... grew up in La Grande, Oregon. I am the oldest of four kids: Me, Julia, Andrew, and Nick.

Growing up in La Grande is boring. I graduated from LHS and then started attending EOU. I guess I needed a change. I didn't know what I wanted to major in, but I knew I needed to get out of La Grande...

So I moved to Eugene, Oregon to attended the University of Oregon. I packed up my little red Subaru Justy and moved to Eugene.

During the next few years I got married, to Loren Shaw, and graduated with a degree in Journalism in 2003. Loren graduated the next year with a degree in Biology. He went on to get his Masters in Teaching and is now teaching High school science in Glide, Oregon.

Loren and I have been together for ten years total, and have been married for six years now. We own a house in Roseburg. We have two beautiful girls, Echo (10) and Natalie (3). The house and our daughters keep us both very busy.

My Interests

My interest/Hobbies Include playing with my kids, music, gardening, photography, reading (if I have time) Sudoku, singing, and watching TV & movies (I graduated with a degree in Communication studies. Example: we watched Disney cartoons and analyzed advertising for sexual context!)

I'd like to meet:

I think it would be fun to hang out with funny comedians: Nick Swardsen, Brian Reagan, Ben Stiller, Jon Stewart... and for a little excitement Carlos Mencia and Dave Chapelle.

Yeah, I'd like to meet people who have done great important things with their lives....but how much fun would a room full of funny people be? But, after that was over I would have to say it would be enlightening to meet people like Mother Theresa (I know she is dead!), Maya Angelou, and other people who have inspired greatness in others.

Music:

I like most music... If I can sing to it - I most likely will like it. I can always listen to Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson to list a few. I have been know to listen to country, the occasional musical soundtrack and oldies are always fun.

Movies:

I often watch movies and think that the directors must have been dumb or stoned on the day they did a certain movie. The film industry dumbs down and shortens perfectly good movies in an attempt to appeal the lowest common denominator or to fit into a certain time allotment. I say they should grow some balls and just do a movie right! A few more minutes to allow for the development of characters or for a good plot is sometimes all it could takes...but I guess I could write an entire blog on that.

That said, here are a list of some movie favorites... most listed are childhood favorites and guilty pleasures, but for some reason I like them. We can always debate the reasons later.

Some of my favorite movies-
"The Little Mermaid"
"The Breakfast Club"
"Adventures in Babysitting"
"Can't buy me love"
"Princess Bride"
"West Side Story"
"The Jerk"

And most any Disney Cartoon movies (but not Pocohantas.)I love to analyze Disney movies for racial and sexual content - so it is a love/Hate thing. But, I must face it I was raised a "Disney Kid!"

For some reason I am compelled to watch "Shawshank Redemption" if it is on TV.

I love mysteries movies, but always seem to solve them before the movie is over. Movies I have watched recently and loved - "The Usual Suspects"

Television:

My favorite show is Veronica Mars. I also like the show Heroes. Every Thursday night I watch The Office with my husband. CSI ROCKS!!(Vegas, not Miami), and House. Shows I wish were still on TV: Arrested Development, Veronica Mars, and Charmed.

Books:

My favorite author is Barbara Kingsolver. I love her book "Prodigal Summer." Kingsolver has also written a number of other great books.
Books To Read!

The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver
A Prayer for Owen Meaney, by John Irving

Tracks, Love Medicine, etc.,
Series by Louise Erdrich

Black Boy, by Richard Wright,

A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle

Chronicles of Narnia, Series by C.S. Lewis

and many more that I will add later.

Heroes:

I have many heroes in my life, but they all have one thing in common, they all shine some ideal I aspire to every day.Dawn is my Hero because she always seems to have a positive attitude.Loren is my Hero because he loves me despite my faults. My Dad is my Hero because he made himself someting from nothing. My sister, Julia, is my Hero because she keeps going every day even when it gets tough.I have many Heroes. I love them all.

J.K. Rowling Outs Dumbledore

I had to post this because I was shocked that as an author J.K. Rowling would delve that deeply into the personal back stories of characters in the development of the book. I guess many authors d...
