Apell is Anthony Pell an Australian, Melbourne musician creating diverse and innovative electronic music encompassing styles such as rock, jazz, funk & dub. Apell has acclaimed as “a tour de force with a creative mind who lives in a world of his own” – (Marty Peters RECORDING Magazine US)
Sounding like the groovier half of Amon Tobin sampling George Clinton with a jazzy electric bass, Apell’s new 2008 album Reconstituted features a drum n bass version of Neil Young’s "Don’t Let it Bring You Down" and a Chill Out reworking of George Harrison’s "Long, Long, Long". Another album highlight is the track Dubya featuring lyrics inspired by inane quotes from President George W Bush’s speeches and his life story.
After playing guitar, bass and keyboards in various Melbourne bands Anthony created Apell releasing the self titled debut album in 2000 producing music that couldn't be created in a regular band format. Apell’s production techniques are inspired by a diverse range of musical influences from rock (U2, Radiohead, King Crimson, Frank Zappa & Jimi Hendrix) to jazz (John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Weather Report & The Mahavishnu Orchestra) and electronic (Massive Attack, Squarepusher, Unkle & Amon Tobin).
Apell music has received rave reviews internationally and has been described as “a crazy eccentric genius.” – (Stillborn Extreme Music Zine - Italy) This musical madness has made Apell a finalist in the Australian National Youthweeks RockIT for 2 years running (2001 & 2002).
Back in 2004 Apell released his 2nd album Beaver Street & Beyond which has been acclaimed as “the best experience one can have listening to music” – (neufutur.com) This album (like all the other Apell albums) features Anthony’s multi-instrumental skills with guitar, bass, sax and keyboards to create music from downtempo grooves to industrial tinged breaks.
Since 2004 Apell has been performing live using a laptop, armed with Ableton Live, & his groovy bass guitar to entertain audiences with spontaneous versions of his recorded music. He has performed as part of Melbourne’s Fringe Festival, Electundra Electronic Music Festival and at various Melbourne venues.
Apell is also a member of the Australian electronic music collective Clan Analogue and can be found on their 2006 Dub compilation Inverted – Further Dub Selections.
Apell’s music has also gained radio airplay on Melbourne (3RRR & 3PBS) and Australian national (JJJ) radio.
