Saturday had no shortage of amazing live music on display in Marin, but THE place to be was The Brick in Sausalito. Of course you've never heard of it (unless you were there) because it hasn't "officially" opened yet. You can check out my first impressions of the club in another blog post - here I'll discuss the music that kicked off the "opening" and blew my mind, my socks, and the roof off the mutha. The act was billed as Vinyl and any Vinyl fans would not have been disappointed, but there was so much more.
The vibe was diverse as guest artists (where did Vinyl end and the Monophonics begin?) flowed in and out. The vocals ranged from soulful ballads to kooky "Chicken Head" groove to silky freestyle rhymes that all served as tasty sauce on top of a heaping helping of organic, free range funk. Or maybe it was soul, or jazz, or whatever you like - it was on fire and always tight.
The crowd never stopped swaying and grooving and the place was absolutely packed! Jonathan Korty and friends came out in full force to remind people that the live music scene in Marin is not dead at all. It was just taking a short nap - after all it's gotten more "mature". Now, with new places to play it's gotten a second wind (or maybe a second childhood). Game on...
