The Unity Community Center of S.J. Inc., located in Camden, New Jersey, is a non-profit organization founded and created in 1983 by Mr. Robert H. Dickerson and burst into full bloom in February of 1984. Mr. Dickerson brought together a group of serious men and women who were concerned about the decline of our community.Our PURPOSE is to help at-risk communities and surrounding communities through educational, recreational, discipline, developmental programs and the performing arts. We will focus on programs that will help the community and reestablish the values of family life. We will improve character, educate, and teach the basics that our youth need to survive and succeed against the difficulties of life which affect low income urban areas. Our Goal here at the Unity Community Center is to give the youth opportunity to experience feelings of Self Worth, Achievement, Confidence, and Discipline. These are the fundamentals needed for anyone to be successful as an employee or a business owner/entrepreneur.The Unity Community Center of S.J. Inc., is the parent organization to all of the performing art programs, which includes the Universal Pasha Karate School, Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble, UPK Pasha Generals, UCC Praise Dance Ministry, UCC Music Ensemble, UCC Royal Brass Band, Dean Tree and more. The founder; Mr. Robert H. Dickerson, along with his wife Wanda and family are also the creators, artistic directors, choreographers and teachers, with other great professionals of our performing arts programs at the center. The Creative Arts High School Jazz Band of Camden, New Jersey is headed by none other than it's wonderful director Mr. Jamal P. Dickerson, who is also the school's Instrumental Music Teacher. Mr. Dickerson is a man who can take any of his students and turn them into a great musician. He is a father to those who have not, a role model, an advisor and a family man. He does about a million things everyday, sacrificing himself and his time for his students and others. The Creative Arts High School Jazz Band has been competing in Jazz Festivals for many years now, but the year 2006 has been the most remarkable, taking home awards for "Best Rhythm Section", "Best Trumpet Section", "Outstanding Soloist" for Drums, Trumpet, Saxophone and the New Jersey State Chamionship in Division III.
