It's been some time since "Kalena and Keneke"
tied the not at Waioli Chapel. So long in fact,
that they are no longer together.
Don't be sad :(
because they're not!
THAT WAS THEN...
Once living on Oahu,
"The Gathering Place"
for many Ohana,
(specifically Ala Ima Street)
Kalena took a Hawaiian Language course.
This was around Oni Pa'a, the 100th
Anniversary of the Illegal Overthrow
of the Hawaiian Monarchy under
Queen Liliuokilani's reign.
Kalena photographed Iolani Palace
draped in black, using b&w film; in class
she was surprised to be sitting
next to a few "older" students who
had denied their Hawaiian Heritage.
Until then.
This was the era when Willie K.
played often at Malia's Cantina in Waikiki.
She loved Leahi, Cecilio & Kapono,
Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, Kapena..
This was the time when the
Hawaiian Style Band was around.
Do they still play?
Jazz became apart of her life as well,
a scat cat named Margery Sauve introduced her
to many musicians at Ward's Rafters and
other venues on Oahu.
THIS IS NOW....
Kalena is now residing in Long Beach,
Southern California, immersed
in the local music scene.
But she often thinks of
the - Love and Aloha - she felt
through the music and people
she met on Oahu, The Big Island,
and ... the little island of Molokai.
MAI TAI MUSIC
Mai Tai Music is the ultimate blend of Island Life and Music
with that of the Mainland. THIS is the place to come before
you visit the Islands, when you visit Long Beach.
Island Musicians scheduled to play in
are invited to post their shows in the comment section.
