As a little girl growing up in the Bay Area, creating poems, cartoons, and stories were some of Melina’s favorite pastimes, next to singing along with anything she could. Since childhood Melina has enjoyed performing in front of the mirror or other audiences willing and unwilling. Through Elementary, Junior, and High School Melina would participate in a slew of plays, cabarets, dance recitals, traditional choirs, jazz choirs, church choirs, and all around performance groups. The main source of her musical training and devotion stemmed from her father’s jazz and gospel influence. For as long as she can
remember, Melina has rehearsed and performed around the Bay Area with her father and sisters. Her passion for singing continued as she entered Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where she began writing lyrics and melodies for he own personal pleasure and sanity. In order to take their artistic careers into their own hands, she and her sisters carried on the legacy their father, Tal Hicks, and his production company, EMK Productions, by founding a theater branch, Ro Theatrix. Along with several other choice musicals, Melina choreographed and costumed their production of Once On This Island, where she played the leading lady, Ti Moune. Upon finishing their LA theater debut, Melina and her sisters decided to focus pointedly on their music, thus the inception of RoGue. Here’s where Melina’s earlier rantings and writings came in handy. The need to see new things, the need to let things out, and the need to share her talent has brought Melina to where she is today and they continue to push her forward. While juggling being Co-founder of EMK Productions and auditioning for film and commercial television, writing and singing continue to be Melina’s most passionate and necessary outlets.
