Four lads who shook Croydon and lived to tell the tale - that's Monkey Trap, a band that rose from the ruins of the Great Wind of 1988, cleared away the fallen trees with their own bare hands and carved out a unique place in the rock 'n' roll pantheon. Their philosophy, they say, is based on a tough upbringing and a creative mistreatment of the truth.
"My dad's been in nick most of my life," says bassist Chopper, 22. "Music was my escape from all that."
Toddy, 21, ..boards, tells a similarly dubious tale. "I was raised by wolves in a clump of bushes by the Purley Way. They tried to encourage me to go to school and get some qualifications, but as soon as I could I got out of there and took up the piano. It was like two fingers to the world."
Monkey Trap's songs are a mixture of muscle-screwing punk/pop and heart-squelching romance. "Don't be afraid of romance," sings singer/guitarist Knocker, 17, in the song entitled 'Don't Be Afraid of Romance', and you know that what he's saying is: "Love me, care for me, try to look beyond the fact that I was snatched away from my parents by a gang of double-glazing salesmen when I was two."
The band's image is most profoundly inspired by drummer Dog, 19, who, until last December, was working in a cake factory. "It was my job to put the smarties on the 'occasion' cakes," he sneers. "I didn't mind it; it was creative and I'd worked my way up from the sponge room, so I had a bit of responsibility, but one day I just realised that once you've seen one caterpillar birthday cake, you've seen 'em all, so I got out of there. I managed to smuggle a couple of three-tier wedding cakes out with me, and I immediately swapped 'em for a drum kit."
Not surprisingly, Monkey Trap are keen to put their badly made-up past behind them. It's all about the future now.
