New Mixtape Release: ’The Corner’- October 2007
Where do the best b-boy jams always seem to take place? The corner. Where’s the best place to hang when you’re
checking out cuties? The corner. Where do graffiti writers leave their mark? The corner. After a hard day’s work,
where does Toronto’s leading lady of turntablism meet her DJ buddies to discuss new techniques? That’s right, ladies
and gentlemen, on the corner
Toronto’s Female Turntablist brings you ‘The Corner’, her first official mixtape. Heavy on the west coast beats,
Ychuck’s new mix combines classic hip-hop bangers with underground acapellas, club cuts and a few unexpected
surprises in between. Whether you’re a smooth talking hustler or an introspective creative sort, ‘The Corner’
will make you bounce, nod your head, wave your hand in the air like you just don’t care, then rewind the mix to make
you do it all over again.
‘The Corner’ features a few of Canada’s top turntablists; theVinylkiller (who recently toured with rock darlings Ill
Scarlett) and DJ Veteran. Word. To order your own copy of the mixtape, please go to the ’contact’ and fill out a
request form. CDs are $10 each, and available for a limited time only!
DJ Ychuck burst onto the scratch scene during the ‘golden era’ of turntablism, and is Toronto’s premier female turntablist. A musically diverse DJ, she’s not afraid to take risks with her sets and she enjoys transcending traditional musical boundaries. She combines a natural flair for DJing with her energetic personality to create sets that elevate and inspire her audience.
Ychuck is the rare breed of DJ who can rock both clubs and battles. In August 2007 she had the honor of judging the Canadian DMC Finals. Later that year she competed alongside Canada’s top turntablists in Toronto’s first freestyle scratch battle, Analog Warz.
On any given weekend, Ychuck can be found playing out in the hottest clubs and lounges. Her club appearances often involve collaborations with live percussionists and bands. In the past year, Ychuck has shared the stage with the legendary DJ Qbert, and world champions DJ Rafik and DJ 8-Ball. She has held residencies at Toronto’s finest venues, including The Drake, Flow Lounge and Harmony. Ychuck has also been a guest artist at many in-store events at Toronto’s trendiest shops including Showroom, Guess, Adidas and Puma. This spring, she was commissioned to create a musical performance for the release of the Volvo C30.
Ychuck is a pioneer of the harmonic mixing technique, and has begun to educate other DJs about this concept by appearing in videos and on television shows. She recently starred in a series of tutorial videos for the ground-breaking software ’Mixed in Key’, and was also featured on DJ Qbert’s ’Turntable TV’.
Always eager to take on a new challenge, Ychuck has also DJ’ed on university radio shows, including CIUT 89.5 FM’s (University of Toronto) all-night hip-hop show ‘Project Bounce’ and CKMS 100.3 FM’s (University of Waterloo) ‘Tangles at Twilight’.
In 2005, Ychuck took a brief break from playing out in the clubs to pursue her passion for music production. She graduated at the top of her class from the Audio Engineering program at the Harris Institute for the Arts. Ychuck then secured an internship at Canada’s premiere mastering facility, Lacquer Channel, and apprenticed alongside Canada’s top mastering engineers. At the studio, she independently mastered records for international artists and learned the art of cutting vinyl.
Ychuck is definitely back on the scene, and this time she’s here to stay. When she’s not busy rocking clubs, she finds time to work in the studio and enjoys collaborating with fellow DJs and musicians. Clearly, Ychuck is full of passion for her craft, and it’s easy to see that this girl is most certainly on her way up!
