Stampyd began as most rock bands of the late 80's and 90's did: a couple of friends with musical equipment and talent started jamming together. Jay and Shannon were in the same high school class and decided they were going to be rock 'n' roll stars. Their first band was named RAL (Rude, Aggressive & Loud) with many of their friends filling in on bass, backing vocals or rhythm guitar. They wrote a lot of songs during this phase. Bob Kepner, one of their guitar playing buddies, co-wrote several songs including "Now She's Gone".
It wasn't until Shannon's little brother, Brandon, started showing his own musical talent around 1989 that Stampyd started to gel together. Brandon taught himself how to play bass, with a little help here and there, while the band as a group spent a lot of time practicing or writing new tunes until they could handle a full show. They played a few small gigs in their home town of Stewarstville, MO before getting booked in St. Joseph or area bars--no small feat since none of the band members were of legal drinking age at the time!
Eventually in 1990 they were given the chance to play for Backstage in Kansas City with Jim Kilroy of Banzai Productions allowing them their start. Stampyd went on to play many shows for Kilroy, though all were low paying, with a few self-booked gigs or through other agencies and friends.
Once STAMPYD finally got into the playing circuit, many opportunities began to arise. They recorded a six song EP that sold locally and did very well for this area. Later the band had the opportunity to record 2 songs on an Inferno Records CD compilation that got quite a bit of publicity in the Kansas City area.
Sadly, the good times came to an end in 1997 (I think, the dates are hazy and my old press kits are gone) when Stampyd played their last gig {barring any reunion shows that may pop up in the future} in Lincoln Nebraska at the Centerstage. The band was tired of doing bar gigs for little-to-no money while agents like Kilroy got a lion's share for simply making a few phone calls.
Shannon still plays guitar when his work and family time allow it. He did a stint in High Society with his brother Brandon but has since kept a low musical profile. Brandon was also in Amenazar Thrush and manages to jam with his bass with his new band Atman Roots as much as his job allows.
Jay, on the other hand, made music his career. He's Director of Bands at a decent-sized high school in midwest Missouri. In addition to this full time and demanding job, he plays drums for Pig Farmer and lead pan for the steel drum band Soca Jukebox.
