GINESIS: The Beginning
At an age when most boys were concerned about girls, sports and video games, Ginesis was more concerned about the next self-described "freestyle king" he could battle. It was common for the rap prodigy to battle and win against freestylers who had made a name for themselves on the underground rap scene. From those on the block to those at school, Ginesis continually engaged in verbal exchange with anyone who was willing to step up to the plate.
After five solid years of creating a reputation that often preceded him, Ginesis began to write his freestyles on paper. He then recorded them over industry beats, resulting in his self-made mixtapes that he distributed all over New York and Illinois. "The response was outrageous. They would tell me, 'Yo, you're nice son.' That's when I began to call my self Dumb Nice because people were telling me that I was so nice, it was dumb," he explains.
With a positive response from the streets, Ginesis was certified to make his next move. At 18, he put his pen to paper again and began writing raps. "I knew how to put words together," says the rapper confidently, "and I liked doing it because I was actually good at it." By the time Ginesis reached 20, he realized rapping would be his career. While continued education was still an option, he moved to the Midwest to go to school and hit the studio.
After his move, a visit to the studio wouldn't take long. One night while patronizing a Midwestern club, Ginesis gave birth to the concept of a song that would later be an instant hit. Calling it "Duckwalk," he explains that the idea came from the more than 100 girls who were in the club doing a dance that reminded him of how ducks walked.
"When I seen the girls doing this funny dance in the club, I thought it was sexy but they looked like ducks," he states with a slight grin. "Shortly after witnessing the dance, I went home and sat down with my friend who is a DJ, and I started freestyling. As he was recording me, he laughed when I mentioned that I liked when the girls do the duckwalk. He told me I should make a song about it and the rest is history."
Indeed Ginesis made history in Milwaukee as an underground artist. "Duckwalk" received tons of airplay on the city's major hip-hop radio station, and it managed to touch the hands of nearly every Milwaukee DJ.
Enjoying his local celebrity status, Ginesis hopes to be known nationally soon. To arrive at that point, he continues to grind with a new mixtape he is dropping titled What A&Rs is Looking For. In addition, he will drop his debut album Sponsored by The Hood the last quarter of this year. "I named it Sponsored by The Hood because I'm self-made by the hood," says Ginesis about the title of his first album. "I did whatever I had to do to put this album out. I get love in the hood."
The first single off the album, ima star " is already creating a buzz in the streets. it's another club song that Ginesis said will take life and add to this summer's heat. When asked what inspires his songwriting he said: "There is no limit to what I can do on the mic or what kind of songs I can make. My rapping style is laid back and I can flip it at any given time. Everything I write is a part of me. I can't write about it if it's not in me. I make club songs because I like to see girls dance. I write hood songs because that's where I'm from. I write what I feel."
And he hopes that you can feel it too!
