"New Millenial Noise"

Even before the fads of the era passed, Twisted Sister's ''We're Not Going To Take It'' video was laughable. The back-and-forth between band frontman Dee Snider and actor Mark Metcalf was always meant to be funny, meant to make light of what would otherwise be a serious situation. But strip away the slapstick and makeup, and the idea of large, angry, amplified men trashing you and your house isn't quite so enjoyable. Now replace the classic metal cheese with new-millennial noise — the sound of musicians influenced more by artists like Atari Teenage Riot, Danzig and Big Black than Alice Cooper and AC/DC.Such was the situation Friday night, after the DJDC's annual Holiday Parade, when the Cryptic Yeast confused a crowd of area youths with acerbic antics that left the Labyrinth Press Company's living room-type environment decimated. Furniture was broken, paintings were knocked from walls and band frontman George Moore did his best to make everyone in attendance feel uncomfortable. In short, it was easily one of the best live music events I've attended during my short time in Southern Chautauqua County. And I'm now mad that I missed the band's previous three live shows and won't be able to attend their gig this Friday night at Carol's Silver Dollar.A post-hardcore group at heart, the Cryptic Yeast's two members play heavy metal with punk energy and have no concern for how either genre is ''supposed'' to sound. The songs are loud, fast, unapologetic and largely electronic — with Moore on synth and responsible for the band's programmed beats. Guitarist Rob Fiasco, who also plays in the area hard rock band Dirty Girlfriend, both shreds and screams, backing Moore on vocals most every song. The duo, which began when Moore and Fiasco met in 2004, first began recording in 2006. Solely a recording project for its first year, the Cryptic Yeast did not debut live until Sept. 7 — which was the opening night of the 2007 Local Music Showcase.''The first night of LMS at Mojo's we were basically playing to our friends, who absolutely loved it. But still, I don't think they knew what to expect,'' Moore wrote in a recent e-mail interview. ''The second night, at the Crown (Theater) was amusing because you could tell the kids had no clue what was going on. They were like 'Who the hell are these guys and what are they doing? Is this a real band?' Some danced, some head-banged, the hardcore kids stood with their arms crossed, etc.''We played to a lot of confused faces,'' Moore continued. ''Afterward, it seemed like people either loved it or hated it, which is fine with us. Our motto is to leave people either totally disgusted and repulsed, or to leave them wanting more. There can be no middle ground.''Though a lofty goal, division is something the Cryptic Yeast achieve with ease. After Friday's set at Labyrinth, the band was alternately told that they were horrible and that they rocked by different audience members. The intent to affect their spectators is admirable, in this writer's opinion, as so much live music these days seems worthy of little more than a shoulder shrug.Even more telling of the band's modus operandi is the fact that the Cryptic Yeast recently recorded a GG Allin cover for a tribute compilation. A perfect dividing point for a divisive band, it seems appropriate to say that people who know the name GG Allin (or even Steve Albini or Al Jourgensen) might be more apt to understand the Yeast.A five-song EP released on Full Rabbit Records will be available at this Friday's Silver Dollar show. Also on the bill is I Am Frankie Scrapmetal, a fellow Jamestown-based experimental alt-metal band.''The EP is just a document of the best of what we've done over the past two years, re-recorded and mixed to sound nice,'' Moore said of the CD. ''It was originally supposed to be a full length, but we were so picky and anal about what we wanted to go on it that it got whittled down to an EP's worth of tracks ... The next show will also be our last for a while because we are going to be hard at work on our full length. Hopefully a year from now we'll be huge in Japan.''
