Free of the restrictions and pressures of a record company and its bewildered A&R men ...no publishing commitments ....no producer to guide proceedings ......no management.....Under this fortuitous star, 4 swingin´ daddies met at the end of 2004 and discovered a will to finally make some music propelled by a gut feeling that could simultaneously shake booties and bring happiness to troubled hearts.Last Date is a labor of love by a group of mates who have over the past 20 years, both individually and collectively, played a part in writing a chapter in international music history.Added together, the 4 players have played thousands of concerts in venues all over the globe.Jon Lord of Deep Purple is as an important part of the credits as Jennifer Rush, Nervous Germans, Conny Plank, Gianna Nannini, Triumvirat and the most recent collaboration, the musical Robin Hood. Grant Stevens wrote the lyrics, Andy Gillmann drummed, Uli Fiedler played bass and Martin Doepke composed the music to the musical and the CD which was recorded in Abbey Road Studios in London.-
But back to Last Date: Grant Stevens, who left his hometown Sydney as a young groover and via London and half of Europe is now in Cologne and who has enjoyed hits in his own right, explains it like this:
"Take a pinch of soul, add a bit of Hendrix, a little Steve Winwood, and a sprinkling of the 80´s. Let the groove take over and keep it dirty, funky. Spontaneity and humor is essential with no 3:40 restrictions. Martin is an ace on his Hammond B3, dudes like him can´t be contained in a radio format. Andy and Uli are a smokin´ rhythm unit, all I have to do is let my ass follow, the songs are like a gentle rain, sending shivers down your spine, getting your feet tapping and your butt shaking. On stage, the band is
amazing, it ignites with the simple joy of playing!"
