About Me
James "Whitey" Bulger was the alleged ringleader of Boston's notorious Winter Hill Gang, and a high-level FBI informant. He disappeared in 1995 after his FBI handler tipped him off just before he was indicted on racketeering and extortion charges. He has since been indicted on additional charges related to 18 murders, and is on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list. The FBI is offering $1 million for information leading to his capture. His entry on the Most Wanted List is the only one written in English, Spanish and French. It says that Bulger "is being sought for his role in numerous murders committed from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s in connection with his leadership of an organized crime group that allegedly controlled extortion, drug deals, and other illegal activities in the Boston, Massachusetts, area. He has a violent temper and is known to carry a knife at all times. He is considered "armed and extremely dangerous." The notice also reveals that Bulger is an avid reader, history buff and animal lover who might be seen at historical sites or animal shelters. Two former employees of a St. Vincent hotel that's owned by men from Bulger's Boston neighborhood have said they may have encountered the fugitive mobster on the Caribbean island in the 1990s. According to The Boston Herald, one of the possible sightings took place after Bulger went on the lam. A former manager has identified Bulger from photographs, saying he was working at a restaurant on St. Vincent in 1996 when an "Irish" American man wearing a clergyman's collar sat down at the bar. The man with the collar said he was a "friend" and "partner" of one of the hotel's owners, and that he knew the man was about to come to work for the hotel. The manager said he was convinced that the man, who had a hardened, street-wise demeanor, was not a priest. "I thought, 'That guy's a phony,'" he said.Bulger is the brother of William Bulger, the former president of the Massachusetts state Senate. William Bulger has long been accused of using that position to shield his mobster brother. In congressional testimony he has acknowledged talking to his brother once since he fled. He also said that he has no idea where his brother is and said there's little he could've done to steer him from a life of crime. After months of mounting pressure over his role in the federal investigation of Whitey, William Bulger resigned as president of the University of Massachusetts in the summer of 2003. The governor had called for his resignation earlier in the year.
