Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Guitarist Winston Carter was introduced to music by his father, Charles Carter Sr. a singer, and his late grandfather, Ernest Williams, a guitarist. He began studying the guitar as a teenager. While performing in clubs, Winston would not only play the guitar, but also showcased his abilities as a vocalist. Winston’ s passion for performing different types of music lead him to play jazz, R&B, and funk. When not performing, Winston was writing and recording his songs in the studio.
While visiting Los Angeles he met Maurice White of Earth, Wind, & Fire, who introduced him to Nancy Wilson’s music director, Phil Wright. This introduction lead to an opportunity to work on special projects for Phil. Winston then traveled to New York to work in the studio with Tom Tom 84, the music arranger for Earth, Wind, & Fire. Winston got the attention of Zanzibar Records, where he signed and recorded an album called “Chazâ€. The song “I Want To Talk To You†made it to #16 on Pittsburgh Top 20 Countdown Chart. In 1987, he won the Budweiser Showdown Award.Winston decided to concentrate on jazz because it allowed him to deeply express himself. He performed at the Crawford Grill, Dowes, Lacy’s, and other top night clubs in Pittsburgh. In 2000, he received the Pittsburgh Band Entertainment Award. While performing at Dowes, Winston met renowned jazz drummer and producer Norman Connors. Norman was interested in producing an album for Winston and his brother Charles. They flew to Los Angeles and hence Brother to Brother was formed.Winston has had the pleasure of opening for George Clinton, Bobby Brown, Roger Troutman, Rebbie Jackson, Lou Rawls, Levert, Angela Bofill, Regina Belle, Roy Ayers, Bobby Humphrey, Jean Carne, and Norman Connors, among others.
