The Moving Sidewalks are zooming up the charts with "99th Floor." Congratulations to Steve Ames and the guys.
SEE YOU AT THE CATACOMBS!
UH SPRING DANCE TO FEATURE MOVING SIDEWALKS Tonight at 8p.m. in O.b. Ballroom the Moving Sidewalks will highlight the 1969 UH Spring Spectacular Callege Dance.Held to Benefit the American Cancer Society.
Moving Sidewalks were born: beside Bill on guitar and vocal there was Tom Moore ..boards, Don Summeres on bass and Dan Mitchell on drums.
1967
The band made it's debut with a psycho-punker anthem: 99th floor released through the local Tantara Records. Both sides of the 7inch were written by Gibbons: it was the beginnng of the collaboration with the producer Steve Ames who will be co-author of some pieces of the group. 99th floor was a hit and was number 1 on the Houston top forty charts for six weeks! This got the attention of Wand Records (home of the Kigsmen"s Louie Louie) who signed The Sidewalks to their first major record deal! The record did well especially in the South climbing the charts to number 4 in New Orleans and top ten in major cities. Several months later Wand released the second single Need Me/Everynight A New Surprise which also got alot of airplay and reached Top Ten status in many markets. The Sidewalks soon found themselves in demand as an opening act with some of the biggest stars of the 60's. Hendrix,The Doors, The Animals, The Young Rascals , John Mayall, Jeff Beck with Rod Stewart, B.B. King, Joe Cocker, Stevie Wonder, Ike and Tina Turner just to name a few!!
In June of 1968 The Sidewalks were asked to join the 'the Texas leg" of The Jimi Hendrix tour Also on that show was the English group "Soft Machine" and Jimmy Vaughn's The Chessmen. What an Experience that was! Hendrix was impressed by the Sidewalks and even stood stage right to listen to their set each night. He later spoke on The Tonight Show of how impressed he was!
