HOUSTON has taken the title from New York and Los Angeles as the city of choice for a new hip-hop generation. The rap scene is a dynamic environment that has seen many changes in the last couple of years. Southern talent is now being recognized. It has never been easy to make a mark in the hip-hop industry, but a rare group of young males known as Gorilla Squad is determined to plant their roots. They are leaving a lasting impression within the hip-hop industry. Before Gorilla Squad, there has never been a group of Houston rappers other than The Ghetto Boys of Rap-a-Lot Records to have longevity in the music industry. Gorilla Squad’s style consists of hard-core, gutta rap from the many different sides of Houston, such as Missouri City, South West, and Third Ward. As members of Gorilla Squad grew up in Houston, the late Robert Davis also known as D.J. Screw, created a sound called screwed and chopped. D.J. Screw also created a movement called The Screwed Up Click (S.U.C.), which was made up of local Houston rappers. Screw and the S.U.C .paved the way for a lot of Houston rappers, introducing them in mixtapes underground that got their voices heard nationally and internationally. D.J. Screw’s unique style was the blue print to success for many of the new and up coming rappers today. Do to the multi-platinum success of Mike Jones, Paul Wall and Chamillionaire many Houston rappers are now being properly recognized. However, the South as a whole has never been recognized for its rap talent, style, or lyrical content. Spitting fire on tracks like venom with their bi-coastal lyrics, Gorilla Squad has a unique sound like no other. This southern established Squad represents the under dawgs, which is why so much of their large fan base can relate to them. The members of this group are not commercial. They are the voices of the hood. Gorilla Squad’s lyrics consist of their own life experiences growing up in the ghetto and dealing with the day to day struggle of poverty and life’s hustle. The group was established in November of 2005, after Pooh (President) and Head (CEO) decided to form a group. After weighing all of their options Head decided on a local known rapper by the name of T.B. a*K*a Gutta boy/Bleeda, who was Pooh’s childhood friend. Because they all are natives of Houston’s streets claiming Gorillas growing up they decided to name the group Gorilla Squad. Since then the Squad has grown in size and reputation, making Houston and the world pay attention. The Gorilla Squad consists of four members: Head, Bleeda, Lil D., and Packy. These four individuals have very different distinctive sounds but have developed their own niche to make up an all star team. “We really believe that GOD put us all together for a reason”. Gorilla Squad brings gutta passion from the streets to the booth with lyrical content of straight truth and no lies. Their constant grindin in the streets and determination has landed them on more CDs and DVDs than most. They’ve appeared on Lil O’s albums “Fat Rat Wit Da Cheese, Food On The Table” and Lil O’s underground CD “Back In The Kitchen”, Hawk’s underground “Incredible Hawk”, The G.R.I.T Boys “713” and Mike Moe/Beltway 8 Records & D.J. Wrecka “Live From The Streets Vol 5, “Same Struggle”mixtape with D.J. Princess Cut and The Wut It Dew family, FM 104.9 Radio Personality/ D.J. Crisco Kidd’s mistape- Block Party. Their own underground mixtapes consist of Primates Vol 1, Trap Game 2 Da Rap Game, Down Souf Pimpin and Unleashed, selling nationally. They also appeared in different videos: Trae- Swang, Trae- I’m An Asshole and Pimp C- Get Throwed. Their DVDs were King Johnny’s Custom Jewelry, Bang- Got videos Vol 3, Mike Moe- Live From The Streets. By over coming adversity they represent the streets, ghettos, and hustlers. They are the people that have had to work hard, hustle and struggle for anything they’ve received in life.
