Ray Brooks, 77, of 1430 Stadium Drive, Bluefield, died Sunday January 27, 2008 in a Roanoke hospital.Born April 9, 1930 in Bluefield, he was the son of the late George Washington and Nora Jane Patton Brooks. Mr. Brooks was a charter member of the Edgemont Baptist Church of Bluefield. He was very active in the March of Dimes having served three times as Chairman of the Telerama, a member of the Board of Directors for Bluefield Baseball, announced the football games for the Bluefield Beavers, designed the logo for the Graham G-Men which is still being used today, he was also an accomplished artist and musician. His unselfish contributions and accomplishments within the community will continue to live on.Mr. Brooks began his career in broadcasting in 1953 in Princeton at the WLOH radio station, and was a well known and loved T.V. Personality for WHIS and later WVVA channel 6 from 1954 until 1974 as Sheriff Snoop on the Snoop and Scoop Show. Mr. Brooks served in many other capacities at WVVA until his retirement in 1995.Ray was foremost a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.Survivors include: his devoted wife of 54 years, Sue J. Brooks of the home; a son, Byron Ray “ Chuck†Brooks and “favorite†daughter-in-law Dolores of Radford, Va.; a daughter, Tamera Sue Brooks-Karnes and special friend Joe Reed of Princeton; two sisters, Myrtle Brooks and Velma Lee Caldwell and husband John, all of Bluefield; two grandsons, Donald Ray Brooks of Radford, Va., and Kristian C. Karnes of Princeton; and an extended family member Michael Reed.Funeral services for Mr. Brooks will be conducted Thursday January 31, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. from the Edgemont Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Owens and the Rev. Daniel Gunnoe officiating.The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 p.m. until time of services.Commital services will be conducted from the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel on Friday February 1, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Ken Owens officiating.Serving the family as pallbearers will be: Kristian Karnes, Donald Ray Brooks, Duane Caldwell, Darrell Caldwell, Danny Ray Caldwell, Rocky Malamisura, Randy Albert and Joe Reed. Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Alex Zachwieja, Mr. Don Whitt, and Mr. Ronnie Cochran.
