Story Time In July 1881 young Frank Besse, whose family was a builder of many-masted vessels, sails from New York to Yokohama, Japan. In the Far East, Frank, as a paying passenger, enjoyed sightseeing and socializing with others from moored American vessels awaiting the reloading of cargo for return voyages to anywhere around the globe.Speaking to seamen, he finds they earn $6 a month wages, some as much as $35. Twenty-five hens are aboard, a rooster, three small pigs, two canary birds and a cat.Part of their return cargo to San Francisco, Frank Besse describes the boarding of more than 500 Chinese "passengers," a reference barely distinct from the "coolie trade," a highly regulated response "to the ending of black slavery within the British Empire from the 1830s to the early 1900s.""Each man," Frank writes, "has a large basket which contains his personal effects and a straw mat for a bed."
