I am here for Friends

About Me

I love to read what people have to write about, especially if it's well written. When someone's writing has a certain something-- I think of as a written voice --that hooks me, I would read anything they could write. Such is true about Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. I love to learn. And read (usually the two go hand-in-hand). Words and language are something that pique my interest. Writing is a great thing, and a wonderful way to express oneself. It is something I do with, well, greater frequency. Art is another way I like to express myself. I draw and, even occasionally, paint. My family comes before all. That is something I like to make known. I would give anything I have for (mostly) anyone in my family. I love humor. Comedy is great, and an art form all it's own. I dislike a lot of strange things: eggs, ketchup (not too fond of catsup, either), Bill Pullman (just watch Titan A.E.!), cherries and many other things. On the flip side of the whole like/dislike coin, I have a bunch of things I like that border on the absurd: the sound of a cicada's song (that would be the Japan lover in me), the smell of a skunk-- I kid you not --and some other quirky things. As I mentioned above, I have a sort of fanboy-ish obsession with Japan. It's people, it's language, it's culture (not so much on the food, but, I am warming up toward fish a bit), it's movies. Pretty much everything about the place enthuses me. That's pretty much me in a nutshell. Anything else you want to know can be gotten directly from me. My Interests

Reading, I will read most anything. Languages, I speak French (though not as well as I used to), a bit of German, and I am trying to learn Japanese. Japan is a big interest of mine, especially it's history and culture. Writing, drawing (though I rarely post anything...) lol Toys. I love toys. They keep me young. I have...well...damned close to 500 Star Wars figures on the surfaces of my room! I also have a few Gentle Giant Star Wars statues, busts and maquettes. I even have a few Kotobukiya vinyl figures too.

I'd like to meet:

Many of the people I would like to meet have passed. It seems all of them had a poetic soul, and I find a special kinship with them. First, the man whom I was named for, John Lennon. Another, being one of John's close friends, George Harrison. There are also several ancient Japanese poets that I find wonderful, and would loved to have studied under. They are Matsuo Kinsaku (who became known as the poet, Basho), Yosa Buson, and Kobayashi Issa. All are Japanese poets from different eras. (Basho was 1644-1694, Buson 1716-1784, and Issa was 1763-1828) As for those who are still amongst the living, I can think of, but one: Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki-san is the director of my favorite anime films including: Spirited Away, Nausicaa and the Valley of the Winds and Howl's Moving Castle. His work is absolutely amazing, and moving. There isn't a film of his that I have seen that didn't make me cry. They are not normally tears of sadness or joy, but, wonderment and beauty.

Music:

The Beatles, Hot Hot Heat, Paranoid Social Club, Queen, Tool, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Pillows. It is rare for me to esteem any artist or band formed after the late sixties or early seventies.

Movies:

Star Wars (all of them), Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds, Amelie (love Audrey Tautou!), a lot of foreign films are in my DVD collection...

Television:

Pushing Daisies, LA Ink, Forensic Files, Dominic Dunne: Power, Privilege, Justice, Scrubs, House, Miami Ink, Ghost Hunters, The Simpsons, Futurama, M*A*S*H, Who's Line is it Anyway?, Many BBC America programs like: How Clean is Your House?, Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Gilmore Girls, 5takes Pacific Rim, Little People, Big World, Take Home Chef, Family Guy, Passport to Europe, Globe Trekker (you have to love these travel shows) What's With That House, Far-Flung Floyd, Good Eats, No Reservations, 30 Minute Meals, $40-A-Day, Eureka, Junk Brothers

Books:

Anything written my Haruki Murakami, On Love and Barley: Haiku of Basho, A Catcher in the Rye, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mocking Bird, The Iliad, The Odyssey, Wicked, Son of a Witch, Anonymous Rex, Casual Rex, Hot and Sweaty Rex and most of the Star Wars Expanded Universe novels.

Heroes:

"You'll find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view." -Obi-wan KenobiObi-wan Kenobi is, I think, the greatest fictional hero out there. He was a mindful pupil, a wise mentor, a steadfast friend, and a brave hero, when it was warranted. He passed the knowledge of the lost Jedi Order onto a new Jedi, and was loyal to the point of self sacrifice.
