About Me

'The Simon Lawrence Jazz Band' is one of the hippest young jazz bands in the UK. It was formed by crooner, Simon Lawrence, and jazz guitarist Miles Davis Landesman. These two jazz musicians met as Simon wanted to perform the classic songs of Miles' mother, Fran Landesman. Fran, often described as 'the first lady of beat poetry', has been writing lyrics since the 1950's. Artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Dorough, Shirley Bassey, Bette Midler, Ian Shaw and Barbara Streisand have performed her songs. As well as Fran's songs, the 'Simon Lawrence Jazz Band' also perform other jazz classics and Simon's own jazz songs.
Simon has been performing extensively with Fran and Miles at some of London's best loved jazz venues including 606 Club, The Spice of Life and the 100 Club. Performing such songs as 'Small Day Tomorrow' and 'Spring can really hang you up the most'. As far as we know, Simon is the only male vocalist ever to record the classic 'Spring...' standard.
Simon Lawrence has been passionate about jazz from an early age and grew up listening to Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr, Dean Martin and many other crooners. Simon loves nothing better than to croon in some hip jazz bar and has played at venues such as Jazz After Dark in Soho, The Big Chill, the BBC and The Kings Head in Islington. He has also performed for top clients such as Pepsi and DeBeers Diamonds. His jazz song 'I DON'T LOVE YOU (BUT MY HEART DOES)' has had great acclaim on radio and podcasts from all over the world. Go to his other page to hear it by clicking on 'Simon Lawrence' in the friends section below. Universal Records' jazz label describe Simon as having 'A great voice. A big voice!'.
Recently Simon collaborated with Fran Landesman by writing the music to her beautiful lyric 'All My Songs', Fran's hilarious lyric 'Crazy Days' and the moving 'Beautiful Ruin' lyric.
Miles Davis Landesman was born in St Lois in 1958. He came to London in 1964. Music has always been his first passion and he has played at distinguished venues such as the National Theatre and the Royal Albert hall.
Colin Gilbert is our fab drummer, Karolina Barmuta our flute player, and the newest member Franco Pesce on Bass.
Keep an eye on this page for gig dates with the 'Simon Lawrence Jazz Band'. The band is currently in the process of recording an album of mainly Fran Landesman lyrics.
