In 1952, Joe Andrews, Sr. brought his family to the newly opened Whataburger in Kingsville, Texas.
Whataburger #5 was the first franchise location, which opened in Alice, Texas, in 1953.
Whataburger #21 opened in 1959 in Pensacola, Florida and was the first to open outside Texas.
Whataburger #24 was the first A-Frame was erected in 1961 in Odesa, Texas.
French fries and fried pies were added to the menu in 1962.
Inside dining rooms were added in 1966.
The "Flying W" was adopted as the official logo in 1967.
The first drive thru was installed in 1971.
Whataburger Jr. was added to the menu in 1973.
The 1980's saw the Breakfast on a Bun, Whatachick'n, and breakfast taquitos added to the menu.
Whataburger had 400 stores in 1987.
In the 1990's Whatameals, Biscuits, Chicken Strips, Cookies and other items were added to the menu.
Big changes came about in 1996 with the introduction of a new building design. With the addition of blue trim the new design sported a softer pitch to the familiar A-frame roof.
On August 8, 2000, Whataburger proudly celebrated its 50th anniversary with 575 units in operation.
April of 2001 the 77th Texas Legislature officially recognized what Texans had known for more than 50 years: Whataburger is a Texas treasure.
In 2005 Whataburger Field opened up to host the Corpus Christi Hooks, the Double A team for the Houston Astros.
