Kenny Koonga is from the Washington DC area. He has been performing professionally as a percussionist for over 15 years. He started out playing for local Go-Go bands. After a successful run in the Go-Go circuit, Kenny decided it was time for a new challenge. €œI knew there was more out there for me musically, I did not want to be known just as a conga player€I wanted to be known as a complete percussionist€?€which meant that Kenny had to study the art of playing all percussion instruments. €œI have spent so many days rehearsing and watching instructional tapes learning from the legends of Latin music such as Giavonni Hidalgo, Poncho Sanchez, Miguel "Anga" Diaz and Tito Puente." Kenny has learned to incorporate Hip-Hop, R&B, Jazz Afro-Cuban and Latin rhythms to become a total percussionist in the truest form. Kenny Koonga has gone on to perform and record with such recording artists as: Raheem Devaughn, Frank Mccomb, Ledesi, Deborah Bond, Algebra, Marcus Johnson Project, Carl Thomas, Maysa, Wayna,Yahzarah, Alyson Williams, Roy Ayers, KAlyn, Grenique and many more. Other bands that Kenny Koonga has performed with include: Proper Utensils, The Soul Patrol, Chuck Brown, Little Benny & Legends, Let it Flow, HuckAbucks, and Progression Band (where it all started in 1988).Kenny Koonga is now part of a 5-piece band known as JustABand. JustABand also known as Sound Of The City is a band of eclectic musicians who have been performing together the last couple of years. €œAfter putting in countless hours rehearsing, performing and recording with various artist, we decided to put that energy into our own project which I must say is our best work to date."
