Ned Hobbs was born on the 8th of August 1987 in Oxford. Since Oxford isn't blessed with the most thriving electronic music scene it was lucky that Ned saw the light way before he was old enough to be going out! Despite the fact he was only 11, 1998 is marked as the year that mattered. It was the release of Delerium’s seminal trance classic ‘Silence’ that caught Ned’s attention as he fell for the beautiful, emotional sounds. His heart has been with melodic dance music ever since, although his sound has developed greatly over the years. He cites FeralCode, Glenn Morrison, Sasha, Marco V, Sander van Doorn, and Above & Beyond as influential modern artists amongst many others.
Ned got his first pair of decks in 2003 and like most DJ’s began playing out at parties and small events in his local area. However it wasn’t until he went to University in Notingham in 2005 that the gigs started to flow. He has played at numerous venues in Nottingham since then including Stealth, Media (Gatecrasher), The Venue, Snug loungeclub, Pelhams, Brass Monkey, Dogma, Moog, Plan B, Ride Bar, I Bar, Sausage Bar and Junktion 7. His talent behind the decks was soon recognised as he made it all the way to the final of the University of Nottingham Juice DJ competition 06/07. His mixes have featured on a number of radio stations around the world also, helping to spread the word. It doesn't stop there... Summer 2008 saw 2 more huge steps forward, with gigs at Itaca, Orange Corner and Cafe Paradis in Ibiza as well as a new residency for Unite, a brand new night in Oxford co-promoted by Ned.
In this day and age it is rarely enough to be a good DJ, the ability to produce belters as well as play them is becoming more and more important. Luckily for Ned he had the opportunity to get involved with producing while he was at school, and he certainly took it! With no one able to explain how to use Reason, he learnt the slow way, by messing about with sounds until he was happy with them. Lunchtimes, after school and music lessons (when he probably should have been doing other things!) were all used to get to grips with as many techniques as possible. The rewards of his efforts are just being realised as his first two records ‘Series’ and 'Substance' have recently been released on Feralcode Records. On the back of that Ned has had two remixes and his original production (featuring Amy Arora) 'Skin' released on Toes in The Sand Recordings. Like his DJing, Ned’s productions span a wide music spectrum from deep, progressive to tougher tech-house.
It is this diverse appreciation of music that is likely to propel Ned further and further up the ladder. With Residencies for Nottingham based nights Retox, Higher State and Hidden Sessions and Oxford's Unite at the moment, his is surely a name to look out for.
Quick note: If you're interested in Ned's music, whether it's productions or DJing please feel free to drop him a message and he'll get back to you as soon as possible...
