About Me

Please visit my website jasonbutterworth.com for more information, Here's a review of my latest record; This album, according to the sleeve note, was cut at Portland, Oregon's, "Kung Fu Bakery" - they must have had the bakery ovens set to "slow burn", because this set simmers away to devastating effect. Funky, dirty Hammond grooves from superb organist Louis Pain offset oh-so-cool precise articulation from guitarist-leader Jason Butterworth on a range of intoxicating soul-jazz outings that leave nothing to be desired. The opener, a tight funk treatment of Duke's 'C-Jam Blues', is an absolute killer, and a brilliant smack between the eyes right from the off. Drummer Anthony Jones is absolutely in the pocket, with an economical and propulsive style that sparks some lovely soaring solos from the two "horns". Butterworth works from a deep blue spot somewhere between Blue Note-era Kenny Burrell and pre-funk Grant Green, and has the style down stone-cold. The programming of the album is faultless, with blues outings, mid-tempo swingers, funky trips and a couple of introspective ballads alternating to keep the listener's interest throughout. I don't know why these guys aren't international names, because this swings like you wouldn't credit, and on the evidence of this CD they're total masters of soulful jazz - it's a great listen! ..
