Australian hip-hop has finally started to gain recognition and deserved credibility by making inroads into the consciousness of the average Australian music listener. Consequently the scene has blossomed, grown and begun to thrive. All points of reference aside the contribution of 2 Dogs, a.k.a. DJ Katch and Dave Dog, could and should never be discounted.

These two very individual characters have, along with fellow godfather, Melbournes DJ Ransom, placed Australian hip-hop in a position from which it may never recover: Popular acceptance. And whether it be through their work with Resin Dogs, DJing with or without live drummer, live band performances, recording efforts, staging of hip-hop events, collaborating with both national and international artists, or promoting quality hip-hop acts through the reputation of their Hydrofunk label, they have managed to gain respect from all quarters.

Circa 1994. David Atkins, classically trained underground drummer extraordinaire, is kicking around with Brisbanes seminal raggametal group, Pangaea. He is studying sound at college and through a fellow student catches wind of soon to be DJ legend who had enrolled in the course the previous year. The DJ is Andrew Garvie a.k.a. DJ Katch. Dave tracks him down and convinces him to scratch for a dub-jazz outfit with whom he is playing. The band is successful and then disintegrates but the two have formed a bond and Katch exposes Dave to the art of sampology.

They continue playing in various live projects and Dave brushes up on his DJ skills. They start Hydrofunk records and travel to England to get their first recordings pressed to vinyl. Upon their return they help form Resin Dogs. The group eventually blows up. Dave and Katch remain true to their roots and continue performing their DJ sets to ever increasing crowds. They adopt the name 2 Dogs and begin to incorporate a live drummer into their DJ sets. Before long their performing live shows with musicians in collaboration with a veritable whos who of Aussie hip-hoppers. The shows are legendary. They release more product and continue to innovate.

The list of acts, artists and events with whom they have recorded, played, collaborated or supported is vast and includes amongst others: DJ Krush , Asian Dub Foundation, Big Day Out Festivals including Boiler Room and Lilypad, Fat Boy Slim, DJ Ransom, Jungle Brothers, Vibes On A Summers Day Festivals, Mnemonic Ascent, Reference Point, Lazy Grey, Brothers Stoney, Trem, Rob Natrule, Adventjah Raves, Ab-Rude, Aceyalone, Livid Fetivals, Mad Doctor X......

1999 saw 2 Dogs release their debut effort, titled Prozac Beats the album was more a collection of early home demos, recorded over a couple of years, than any concerted effort or particular focus. Initially released through Horrorshow records the album was released in an effort to quench the thirst of a fanbase that were desperate to sample some of their recorded material. The success of the album surprised everyone concerned.

The past year or so has seen 2 Dogs back in their home studio, The Pound. With updated technology and skills they set about recording their first serious and focused effort. As a result of their credibility within the hip-hop community they have been able to collaborate with some of Australias premier MCs and DJs. Raph-Boogie and BVA of Mnemonic Ascent, Lazy Grey and Len-One of Brothers Stoney, DJ Ransom as well as L.A.s Abstract Rude contribute to The D & K Sessions. The album also ushers in the arrival of unheralded talent of female MC Kowhai (pron. Cor-fi). Her talents would put most male MCs to shame.

The D & K Sessions is a superbly articulated effort of flexed funk and beats that sets the agenda and standard for future Australian releases. Its contributors bear testament to its quality.

Recorded projects, though, are only part of what constitutes 2 Dogs. Their reputation has been built on the back their memorable live performances and live collaborations. To quote a fan who was posed what would they write if it were left to them to do a 2 Dogs bio, Fuck that, just see em live.
