Originally from Chicago, I arrived in Los Angeles September 6, 1996. I remember this very clearly since it is the day of my mothers birthday. My initial reason for coming to LA was to visit my best friend, Kimberly Young-Williams and ironically after spending two weeks out here, I decided to stay. I quickly landed a great sales job and with that I found an apartment in the valley (North Hollywood/Studio City) and quickly made LA my home.Ten years later or so I am now a screenwriter/director and soon to be novelist. I believe that I was destined to live in Los Angeles for the mere reason I had no desire to. I dreamt of living in New York or maybe Paris, but never LA. So by the grace of God I was lead here and because of the circumstances upon arriving (me landing a great job that paid very well) made it that much easier to stay. The first four years in LA I successfully went through the COSBY WRITING PROGRAM, WALT DISNEY WRITING FELLOWSHIP, WARNER BROS. COMEDY WRITING PROGRAM and won the ORGANIZATION OF BLACKSCREENWRITERS NATIONAL WRITERS AWARD. My friends joke around and say that I have been in every writing program in LA. and even though I haven't, it is close. I honestly contribute my program success to just writing. I believe that the more you write and develop your craft, the better you will become. Learn from your mistakes, take notes gratiously and by all means learn your structure. But over all, just WRITE! By the time I was done with Warner Bros. writing program I had 25 sitcom spec that I had written over a 4 year span!My first job was a writer on Girlfriends and from that experience I quickly realized that sitcom writing was not for me. I still loved writing, but that format was just not satisfying. I needed deeper character development, so I quickly jumped into screenwriting, plays and novels and found success but mostly... deep satisfaction in my writing. In 2004, I co-wrote the film Female Trouble with Gary Hardwick (writer/director of The Brothers and Deliver Us from Eva) and adapted the best-selling novel Friends and Lovers by Eric Jerome Dickey for the stage in a Jercaryous Johnson Production starring Leon (from The Heartbeat), Miguel Nunez (from Juwana Man) and Monica Calhoun (from The Best Man). Over-all I have completed 15 screenplays since leaving sitcom and now it is time to see them on the big screen!!! JUST WRITE!I believe everything happens for a reason, and there was a reason I came to visit my best friend in LA and never went home.
MY MOTTO THESE DAYS IS TO THINK BIG, THEN THINK BIGGER! OUR DREAMS SHOULD NEVER BE LIMITED TO AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE, BECAUSE AS SPIRITUAL BEINGS WE CAN SOAR FURTHER THAN WE COULD EVER IMAGINE, IF WE JUST BELIEVE!
