Tom Ionescu is a young Canadian guitarist living in the Toronto area. Born in Romania, his family moved to Toronto when he was nine. His father, Dan Ionescu, a preeminent guitar player, introduced him to the guitar early on, as well as players such as B. B. King, Pat Metheny, and John Scofield among many others. Tom spent most of his high school years playing in high school rock bands as well as teaching guitar lessons. At the age of 16, after accidentally overhearing his high school jazz band’s performance of Weather Report's Birdland, Tom was inspired to begin studying jazz guitar under the tutelage of his father. Tom is currently in his third year at York University, studying with acclaimed guitarist Lorne Lofsky. He is also studying music education and history education in the Concurrent Education Program at York.
Tom’s most recent accomplishments include:
- Recording a live performance in 2008 for Jazz FM91 as part of the York University Quintet (directed by Mike Murley).
- Performing at the 2007 TD Jazz Festival as part of the York University Sextet (directed by Al Henderson).
- Being the 2007 recipient of York University’s prestigious Harvey-Marsden Music Award.
- Placing first in Ontario in the Emergenza Festival competition and 5th in Canada, as part of Toronto's hip-hop group, the Brothers From Different Mothers.
These days you can catch Tom playing around York University and the Toronto area as part of various jazz ensembles including The Handsome Ben Young Trio, Zach Sutton and The Jazz Stallions and the Dana Yehudaiff Quartet, as well as Toronto's pop sensation, Jane's Party.
