Know Your Rights And The Police

About Me

Throughout the past year I have had the opportunity to work with a group of young people, ages 8- 10 from the Bronx, in my capacity as a freelance spoken word teaching artist. As a part of my curriculum I emphasized the importance servicing our community. To fulfill some of this responsibility the youth decided that they want to look at the issue of police brutality and what they could do to end it. After examining the issue we came to the conclusion that one of the reasons for the miscommunication between our community and the police is the lack of knowledge and proliferation of the knowledge when it come to knowing ones rights and proper procedure when dealing with police. To rectify this situation the youth decided they would start a campaign to proliferate this information throughout their community. They hosted workshops for other youth, distributed flyers explaining ones rights, and they traveled to Albany to lobby our representatives around the issue. In support of their project I set out to produce an Audio CD. The idea was to create an Audio track that would be easily accessible and absorbed by people who are constantly bombarded with messages competing for their attention. To that end we kept it simple and straightforward; I recorded Spoken Word artist Chaia Brown reciting a poem, and the voices of youth one by one reciting the most important things a person should know when dealing with the police. Then mixed all that agents a backdrop of banging drums and a smooth baseline produced by yours truly. You should know your rights and the police because you never know when or if you will get stopped, or like when you in your house and the police come you should know what to do.

It's about making the community a better place to live. It's about us working together

Hi everyone my name is Karrellyn. I'm 11 years old and in the 6th grade. I love to jump rope. It's one of my many hobbies. I also like to listen to music. I'm from the Dominican Republic. I think it is important to know your rights and the police because if you are dealing with the police you should know what you can and cannot do. You have to know what can get you hurt and what will make you get arrested. Be sure to know your rights and the police cause I do.

I think that is important to know you're rights and the police because you may never know when you will get stopped by the police or if they go to you're house and they want to search you're house even when you are not doing anything. That's why you should know you're rights and the police. The community change project is about working together and achieving what you want, it also means making our community a better place to live. I learned many things during the community change project. I learned that working together is hard but can be lots of fun and achieving what you want is possible.
