"There’s a reason why people brave the lines and the heat and the bums to get into the Pawn Shop Lounge. And though some credit might go to the wonderful bar staff (you go, Joel!), most of it goes to the peeps behind the tables — those rhythmic readers of the party, the bringers of the fine set, the mothers who’ll make you sweat. One such fine young man, who’s increasingly making himself aurally available, is DJ Gunars. Picking it and dropping it anywhere out of the realms of soul, reggae, ska, punk, house, blues, jazz, whatever, Gunars reads what the crowd needs and keeps you going back to the bar for "refreshments.""
“The DJ is Gunars Elmuts. He’s got the crowd feeling his flavor of disco punk, sweaty funk and hiphop. Drunk girls are swinging and shimmying down two stripper poles set up on the leveled bleacher seating. Above them, a pair of chainsmoking Parliament Light party girls are grinding one another, holding on to subway strap handles attached to the wall. “ – New York Press 03/2004
