While the roots of HHK date back to March 2003, the event was officially birthed in December 2004 at Rothko, the since-closed popular NYC downtown music venue. Since then, and moving on to the Knitting Factory, this event has given thousands of people the opportunity to witness, and participate in, this unique celebration of hip-hop. HHK is one-of-a-kind in New York and has already earned the praise of everyone from the New York Post to the Village Voice to XXL Magazine and many more. Not to mention, HHK NYC has been visited by such hip hop luminaries as Big Daddy Kane, OC, Pete Rock, Masta Ace, Jeru the Damaja, Tek of Smif N Wessun, DJ Evil Dee, Rock of Heltah Skeltah, Rhymefest, and more!
HIP HOP KARAOKE CHAMPIONSHIP 2!!!
BROOKLYN REGIONAL EVENT:
MANHATTAN REGIONAL EVENT:
THE MAIN EVENT:
CHAMPIONSHIP RULES & INFO:
20 people will compete for the chance to move on to the finals at each regional event. The Top 6 from Brooklyn and Top 5 from Manhattan all advance to January's Championship, where they'll compete for the $1,000 prize and shot at Hip Hop Karaoke Champion.
Wanna compete for the championship? There are two ways:
* Sign up to perform a track during the designated sign-up period (9pm-10pm). At the end of the sign-up period for each event, 10 people will be randomly selected to compete that night. Those picked will be added to a list of competitors pre-selected by the HHK Crew to battle for the chance to move on to the Championship.
* Send us a link to an original video of you performing one of the songs from our list to video[at]hiphopkaraokenyc[dot]com along with your name and contact info (If you have the instrumental, great. If not, you can rhyme over the vocals. No a capellas though and no lyric sheets to help you.). Four winners will be chosen (two each event) for automatic entry in the regionals. Deadline for all video submissions is Friday, November 6 at 5:00 p.m. and you MUST be available on both Nov. 13 and Dec. 4 to qualify. Winners will be announced on our blog the week of November 9th.
Please note that while all competitors are welcome to be as creative as possible in the regionals, no lyric sheets, back-up dancers, or hypemen are allowed. It's just skill versus skill. Of course, special guest judges will be grading the performances each night. See ya there!
