Hey everybody and welcome to my own little corner of the internet.
I'm a roadie I do pyrotechnics by trade(indoor fireworks) but lately I've been working more as a road manager and by the way I've been told I kick ass as a road manager
I've been in the music/entertainment industry ever since I was a kid thanks to Marshall Brodien my dad (who built lighting gear) and my brother (who sang with some local guys)so I've learned my lessons through out the years about the industry and the people that are a part of it and some of those lessons were a whole lot harder to learn than others.
My very first “break†happened when … Yeah it was that whole totally being in the right place in the right time thing.
Like I was saying, my first “break†happened when I got a gig running lights, for a basement band named HOAXX. A few gigs later and next thing I know I’m also the pyro guy shooting flash pots.
Oh yeah! By the way, that whole shooting flash pot thing was totally by accident, but when my cue came up and I flipped the switch for the very first time and everything went BOOM, I knew right then and there it was time for a serious career review because it was like bang and like fireworks and I was like oh hell yeah!
So after awhile of doing shows with HOAXX all over even out of state a lot of the other bands from around here started to know who I was, and wanted to pay me to do lights and pyro for them more and more gigs started to come my way, that summer I got a job working at one of the local lighting companies, one thing led to another and I'm out on the road touring, I'll never forget that morning I woke up and stepped off the tour bus in Hollywood, California for the first time.
But touring got kinda old for a little bit so I took a break and stretched my legs for a minute and moved to Hollywood I even put a band together and played out as a singer for awhile. But then I came back to doing what I knew how to do the best and that was pyro.
I was able to land a really sweet gig and worked for a pyrotechnic company near Huntsville Alabama for awhile which allowed me to tour with quite a few national acts (I should write a book!) before going out on my own.
Being a roadie, really can be kinda sweet at times and does have some advantages, But, it still is really hard work.
Sometimes its long hours with very little or no sleep and it can take you pretty far away sometimes half way around the world from home and the ones you love, the road isn’t for everyone.
With that said I would like to take this opportunity now to pop some of those misconception bubbles for a few of you idiots (and you know who you are!) that think you know so much about the music business and being on the road.
First of all, we aren't out partying with the band and we don't "hang out" with them when we're not giging and unless your the production crew (sound, lights, pyro, ect.)you really don't have much contact with the band.
And sometimes the bigger the band the bigger the pain in the ass they can be to the crew when their fans aren’t around (isn't that right, Mr. Simmons).
But on the other hand sometimes the bigger the band the more cooler they are with the crew.
Second, NOT every girl walking around backstage is a stripper or a ho, they ARE in fact our families, wife’s, sisters, girlfriends, friends or people that work for the band, yep there are girl roadies and they work just as long and hard as us guys.
Third, for all of you lucky folks (and you know who you are) to get a VIP pass we call them “posers passes†you guys get free beer and get to stand on the "poser stage" or sit where they tell you to go hang.
Oh and one more thing at the end of the night when the shows done and the band has left in their bus or Limo and the last truck is loaded and pulling out at 2 or 3 AM that’s when we get to grab a shower if there's time if not you grab a beer and get in your bunk, because it starts all over at between 6 and 9 AM.
I think that’s enough about the road for now.
If I’m not out on the road, every now and then, for fun, I do special effects for B-movies. And if you look in my photos you can see I’ve even had a few parts in some of the movies too.
And for all of those of you that know me nothing but love to you.
