Pablo Sablo emerged as a singer and bodrhan conjurer on the 1983 classic "Stoney Bridge" by Gnostic Druid, as the altar ego of guitarista Paul Burtone. "Pablo Sablo's music is a blend of World Music styles including Celtic, Afro-beat, west African soukous and highlife, Brazilian samba and bossa nova, blues, folk, reggae, and jazz," says Burtone.
"Chomping at the Beat," a long in-the-works solo CD of original compositions written over the past 20 years and twisted arrangements of traditional tunes was begun in 2005 and completed in 2008 . The Pablo Sablo sound features soukous and highlife electric guitar riffing, danceable odd-meter grooves, deep reggae vibes, and strong vocals. The lyrics are poetic, politically conscious, thoughtful and/or oblique. The music could be described as "Earth Beat Jazz" with a strong rhythmic foundation and creative improvised solos featuring flute, sax, harmonica, violin, bass, and guitars.
Musicians featured on "Chomping at the Beat" are Bay Area jazz stalwarts Curtis Ohlson (bassist with Ray Charles, Ray Obiedo, Pete Escovido) and drummer Josh Jones (Omar Sosa, The Coup, Zion I) along with southern California electrified chromatic harmonica master Bill Barrett, Celtic fiddle wizard Bill Rhea, and eclectic sax man Lary Moore. Vocalists Jane Selkye (Plain Jane), Cyoakha Grace O'Mannion (Druid Sisters Tea Party), and Cait McWhir (Haunted by Waters) add their beautiful voices to the mix as well. See the links page for links to their work. Paul Burtone continues his quest for the title of Riff Meister with tasty and edgy electric guitar leads, solid acoustic guitar whomping, and creative blending and bending of multiple genres.
Check out the reggae version of the traditional Irish fiddle tune "Raggle Taggle Gypsy" featuring Barrett's inspired harmonica soloing. This pre-release version is a taste of things to come. Enjoy and check back soon for new mixes and info on the imminent release of the full CD, "Chomping at the Beat," by Pablo Sablo.
Paul Burtone has played guitar for 40+ years in a variety of settings, styles, and bands. From the eclectic political satire of Dial-ec-lec-tics to the Irish traditional music of Woodkerne, from the Blues-Rock-Jazz of the Bill Barrett quartet to the African Roots Reggae of Black Rebels, from the Brazilian stylings of the Berkshire Samba Group to the Celtic Contra Dance music of the Rhubarb Pie String Band, Burtone keeps it groovin' and always pushes the music forward.
