Each of our lives is set to a melody. At times, this melody may follow a strictly-composed score, though we often leave it open to artistic interpretation. Other times, our lives may not provide us with song, and we must improvise. I have never been content to simply allow these phrases and riffs act as a soundtrack to my life. Instead, with every experience, every new movement of the score, I reacted. In my early childhood, I embodied innocence, play, and wonderment through dancing. Soon, I learned to channel my emotions through movement. I danced grief, loss, disappointment, and perseverance. By the time I came to college, I’d learned that for every development, divertissement, or dissonance my song line presented, I could choreograph my own recapitulation.
Dancing has been and will always be my medium of expression. No matter how I must appear to the world, I am true to myself when I dance. The more I’ve studied the art and refined my perception of dance, the more I’ve begun to identify myself as an artist. It is evident that one art augments another. As a society, individual artists have a large impact on their colleagues from all disciplines. One artist’s triumph should be celebrated by the entire community because we all benefit from one-another’s successes. I believe we should accept this fact gladly and appreciate the uniqueness of our work environment. I believe we should first, embrace our identities as artists—second, stop apologizing for ourselves—and third, unite with fellow artists to create a social awareness of the legitimacy of our field.
