First Verse, a local island contemporary group based in O'ahu, has found their way into the hearts of their audience by redefining the music genre of Hawaiian Island Contemporary. What started out as afternoon jamming sessions between classes has five years later evolved into a band with their own unique musical personality of Island Contemporary with flavors of R&B, Jazz, Reggae, and Funk. The versatility and smooth onstage vibes of First Verse have given them the range to reach all types of audience from setting the mood at trendy bar lounges to sharing precious moments at weddings and first birthdays to spicing up outdoor festivals.
Recently released is First Verse's debut album, "From the Top" under their own record label First Verse Productions. They have received the opportunity to work with Dave Tucciarone, a Na Hoku HanoHano award winner, as their mix engineer and album producer. With seven original compositions and three covers, "From the Top" takes island contemporary to the next level by combining the band's other musical influences to create pieces that appeal to listeners from across the board. The album was a Hawaii Music Awards nominee for best Island Contemporary Album of 2007.
Dating back, most of the members of First Verse have known each other since their high school days. Drummer, Bryan Sanchez and Guitarist, Co-vocalist, Glenn Domingo, were childhood neighbors residing in the Kalihi. Bassist Ervin Nicolas and Guitarist, Lead Vocalist, Allen Ubaldo both attended Radford High. The initiative of starting a band came forth by way of the military 111th Army Band between Bryan, Ervin, and saxaphonist, Dave Hirano. Jamming sessions at the UH Campus Center steps and dorm apartments with Lead Vocalist and Ukelele, Allen Ubaldo, Ervin, Glenn and Bryan made it official they had found the elements they wanted in a band. April Centeno has been the most recent addition to the group. First Verse extends beyond professional connection, being a band that actually grew up together.
Currently you can catch First Verse performing regularly at Ige's Restaurant in Pearl City and Kochi Restaurant and Lounge. Upcoming appearances can be found on their schedule right here on MySpace. We are excited to announce First Verse's new single, "Sweetest Times" is now playing on island radio.
