About Me

(pron. "mala + kee", similar to the Arabic "Maliki") derives from 2 different sources: 1. the High King Maoilseachlainn ("devotee of St. Sechnall" one of Saint Patrick's first companions) & 2. St. Malachi (1095-1148 AD) who was the Bishop of Armagh & adopted the name from the Hebrew prophet "Malachi" whose name means "my angel" or "messenger of God." In the house Malachi grew up in music was not a thing to be taken lightly. Dad sang with such raw emotion that as a young child Malachi used to scream for him to stop. They were Irish songs in the old style, elongated & lilting. From a time before guitars & professional “Folk music”. His brother Greg’s violin music was permitted because he practised till he fell asleep. Basically, if you weren’t serious, you had to shut up, & children should be running about outside with their friends. When Malachi was 12, the music teacher at school discovered the boy could sing. The bad bit was he was a boy soprano & the school was all male. Singers carried a death warrant on their heads, coz “real men” let their punches do the talking. About the time Puberty hit, Malachi discovered R&B & guitar rock. “As long as I wore headphones I was safe from the critics outside my door.” One day Malachi stumbled across John Lee Hooker & Carlos Santana together. That was it. Then he heard the hotspot with John Lee & Taj Mahal & Miles Davis. The snowball was growing. The songs written in the head one day wound up on the piece of paper in front of him. “My musical development progressed with no logic. I wound up in situations & was expected to play…. I sang Gospel, Country, I sang & drummed in The Bula Brothers…”, a Fijian “grog” band, where Malachi learned 4-part Pacific harmonies. He played rock (Art Shall Be Free). Marriage break-ups saw a camel’s back broken & he found himself in the Streets of London alone. A one-man show emerged. The songs he played were the sort one man can pull off. Hence the blues. The music of a man alone. Sing the blues & people appear. We all started to Boogie-woogie & as John Lee had predicted it felt so good…the story goes on…. In late 2006, an album was begun. The lead vocals and rhythm guitar played live, & other parts added. Malachi lived at & held a weekly residency at the “Dirty South” in Lewisham (SE London) for more than 6 months. “The sort of place where you don’t have to worry about breaking anything”. The feel of the place saw a toughening of sound & lyrical concerns. Malachi has performed over 200 shows in the last 2 years around the U.K. and Ireland. At the end of 2007, after “…too much ****ing around…”,the album was finally finished. The eclectic country-blues flavoured “Flood Alleviation Scheme” is available from i-tunes from mid-April 2008. A tour to the States beckons. A songwriter & guitarist, Malachi describes himself as foremost a singer. “I strive for Little Richard’s requirement for any performer to give it all to you. “Coz that’s what you want: you want it all or none”.” New Album available for download at: http://www.apple.com/itunes or www.cdbaby.com/cd/malachidoyle
