About Me

OFFSTAGE BOOKSHOP took over a gentleman's outfitters on the fringes of Camden Town in 1982. Although it took 24 years to wipe the smile off our face, we felt the fear and moved into the heart of theatre land. We shoe-horned ourselves into a thriving bookshop called Treadwell's, which stocks a fine selection of books on myth, magic, belief. We live in the basement and while we would now describe our stock as eclectic rather than comprehensive we do embrace visitors who weary of Covent Garden's many charms and who wish to collect or exchange thoughts or argue the number of angels on a pinhead. We occupy a liminal space and would even go so far to say we, ourselves exist in a liminal state. This indeterminacy could take us anywhere or nowhere but we are open to any suggestion/project/bright idea that might be worthwhile, fun to do and a reason to get up in the mornings.

My Interests

We are an independent Bookshop in London's Covent Garden specialising in Theatre, Film and Popular Culture.

I'd like to meet:

People who get their hands dirty in the arts - you make theatre, film, dance, performance art or you want to. You think about art and wonder if it thinks about you. You write - plays, screenplays, treatments, cvs and/or bright ideas on the back of napkins. You're interested in comedy, puppets, dramatherapy, theatre-in-education, games, impro, masks, costume, stagecraft, documentary, filmmaking, acting & audition material and storytelling, puppets, circus and

Heroes:

If not all exactly heroes at least to be admired:Woody Allen, David Mamet, Sam Shepard, Sgt Bilko, Curb, Peep, Ella, Frank, Eartha Kitt, Updike, Roth, Theroux (Paul), Jacques Brel, Cat Power, Jean Sablon, Rick Stein, Randy Newman, Jake Thackery...

How do they do it?

How do they do it.  On the bus this morning, the woman next to me was putting on nail polish, jet black, applied with confidence and an unerring sense of perfection, all this while the bus i...

clearing up a confusion

It has been brought to my attention that my profile is misleading as to age. A common mistake because people continue to confuse the bookshop with me.  The bookshop is a mere 23 years old, althou...

Mugged by a cold caller's frenzied friendly foot in the door and the knee that goes with it. There, in the moment before irritation/annoyance/anger sets in you stand bemused/confused/blank...

the weather today

Growing up in Texas the default mode of greeting was 'hot enough for you?' or to put it more grammatically, 'hot enough fer ya?!' Well, actually, no it isn't hot enough for me. 110 degrees fahrenheit ...

a walk in the woods

A friend and I decided last week to take a few days off to walk the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley. It is surprising how few people - London people anyway - know where the Forest is.  They can...

the neighbourhood continued

We are less excited now by working in COVENT GARDEN!!  No more overexcited prose. Reality kicked in and that is a good thing, of course. I'm no smarter and unfortunately the same goes for the hab...

Getting to know the neighbourhood

Moving is a disturbing experience but we all know that already. 25 years in Camden Town can't be that good for the soul. Everyone was getting younger, I was getting older  and in dog years. ...
