Born in the culturally and musically rich city of Dakar in Senegal, Boubacar Gaye, for as long as he can remember, has been surrounded by the rhythmic joie de vivre of music. At the budding age of fourteen, inspired by the musical mentors around him, Boubacar laid his hand to the skin of the drum.Under the guidance and tuition of drum teacher - Joseph-Raphael Bouschanzl, Bouba's skill and passion grew briskly and earnestly and soon he was enrolled in Senegal's National Music School where he further immersed himself in music. In 1997 Boubacar graduated from the school and soon ventured across the West African borders - into Europe - where he took his dexterity, energy and musical talent and turned them into a firey performance on the stages of various European countries. However, in 1999, Boubacar took a plane to the oriental island - Japan - a place where he has since inhabited. In the chaotic and metropolitan capital city of Tokyo, Bouba has continuously heightened his profile and garnered respect as one of the city's leading drummers. As a result of his persistance, talent and travail Bouba has formed and partaken in a number of ensembles in Tokyo both with fellow African musicians/dancers and Japanese musicians/dancers alike, who together have travelled right through Japan and oft overseas. He was also bestowed the honor of becoming a member of Kaze - a collaborative effort with a Finland based contemporary dance company.2005 marked itself as a successful year for Boubacar Gaye, who is close to releasing his own solo album (of which you can hear on the MP3 player above in the listening locus) as well as having featured on the wondrous jazzed up album of Japan's 'Ageha' and another album where the urban lyricism of Boubacar Gaye was put to the test.Last year was also Boubacar's first time visiting Senegal with his own Japanese drum and dance students where his mentor, Joseph, joined together with Bouba to play host to the students and help them immerse themselves in the unique culture that Senegal has to offer. With an energy and peace of mind that resonates from deep within, filtering through his fingertips and the body of the drum, only to emerge in frenetic and powerful waves of rhythms - Boubacar Gaye speaks one thousand words with his djembe.Get Your Own! | View SlideshowGet Your Own! | View Slideshow
