About Me

Cowman, the Moosical! A kitsch cowboy musicalWritten by: Joe GautierWhat is a cowman, you ask? Simply put, a cowman is what’s left over from the men of the wild west. We’re modern men, raised on Pop Tarts, Pop Rocks and Popular Music . Men raised on the range of leather furniture warehouses and fast food restaurants with nothing but concrete picnic tables, landscaped in plastic holly. We still live in the wilderness, but there are no more cactus. The prairie dogs are long gone and so are the nights spent sleeping under the stars. But the wilderness is still inside of us all. It still calls to us. That’s why we drive 34 hours to Dollywood in the dead of winter on Highways of coal black asphalt lined with Cracker Barrel restaurants and Outlet Malls to stand in the rain with our three kids waiting for 2 1/2 hours to ride the Haunted Log Flume. The long riftle is gone now and our horses, once our only real friends, are roped together for quarter mile guided rides around a stagnant pond. They, too, stand lonely and silent as if they’ve lost something of themselves. Horses, like cowmen, were not meant to walk conrete paths. They’ve grown weak in their wills and I notice how they look at me, brown eyes without souls...but they know that I have no place left to take them. There are no more cattle drives. Horses are not welcomed at the driving range. They seem sad to me.Cowmen travel early in the morning with bad coffee in a six year-old, Chevy Impala with chips in the windshield listening to other people’s opinions on talk radio. There’s a hole in a man’s soul that has to be filled with wildness. The cowman still lives alone in the world, but he’s still looking for something. And every now and then, when it rains, you can see him looking out the kitchen window...past the satellite dish and over the edge of the neighbor’s roof to someplace beyond the Home Depot Garden Center. He’s looking for a way home. I am a cowman and this is my story.
