Dertybird is an exclamation of gutsy Rhythm and Blues mixed with Funk and Southern Vinyl Rock. This Austin based band delivers raw and gritty yet harmonious sounds that will open your ears and bring you into the music.
In late 2006, Dertybird came together and began to develop their sound, style and repertoire. For the past year and a half, they have been touring regionally and preparing to record and release their first full-length album, all of which has been self-produced. Affording this growth only on revenues earned from live shows, a self-titled EP, and band merchandise. Pure Analog, Dertybird’s forthcoming LP, is being recorded and mastered at Nest Studios in Austin, Texas and will be released in the fall of 2008.
Drawing on the influence of groups like The Faces, Humble Pie and The Meters, and then marrying that funk/rock sound with the human emotion of heartfelt southern blues has defined and shaped the group. Although too young to have heard it firsthand, frontman Clayton Colvin can belt out vocals reminiscent, of the sound and scene, of the early 1970’s in his hometown of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. A time when greats like Percy Sledge, Otis Redding and Lady Aretha were recording there. Dertybird takes that raw soul and mixes in the sophistication of guitarist JT Holt, bassist Lee Brock, and drummer Nick Summers. JT’s harmony driven slide guitar and the smooth and funky vibes of the rhythm section layered with the swells of Clayton’s lyrics and beckoning delivery are Dertybird. If they had a message, that would be it. Dertybird is about music that moves and grooves the listener. It is raw but clean and delicate, demanding and still subtle, real yet incredibly surreal.
