The fact is that it has been misrepresented. Mista Mal, the homegrown, grassroots rapper from Birmingham, Alabama, has risen from the streets to the edge of fame with his classic southern drawl and potent lyrical realness. Mista Mal is starting a new democracy of rap in the state of Alabama – it’s a whole new representation. He is The Governor.Mista Mal started young in the game, rapping for friends and family at the ripe age of ten. He got schooled on the streets of Birmingham early. Mal grew up knowing that life wouldn’t roll up free with twenty-four inch rims and black-tinted windows. He knew respect wouldn’t be cheap either. With a dad who was barely around and a mom who worked hard to support his family, Mista Mal developed a skin that was thick enough to protect against the cruel realities of life. He knew he wanted successes – eventually, he realized how to get them.Mal got his first push rapping at the local Birmingham radio station, where a DJ friend of his let him freestyle on the airwaves on a regular basis. It was there that he localized the pent-up feelings he had accumulated over the years – it was on the radio that he learned to channel those emotions into a microphone. After finding his flow with the local group, Drama Boyz, Mal started up his own project, writing beats and working with big-name producers like Mr. Lee and the Justice League out of Florida. Using classic Dirty South bounce and grind beats and his own calculated rhyme patterns, Mista Mal developed a style that distanced itself from the typical southern rappers already burning up the Hip-Hop charts.Drawing strong influence from the love for his home state, Mista Mal is a master of the rap anthem. Singles like “Whoa Na” and “Hot Diggety” burn with a hotness that can only come off the Deep South streets. His lyrics drop with a scintillating energy, and his beats are monumental and complex. Where lots of rappers sell out in the name of flashy hooks and bleak commerciality, the Governor refuses to do that. His music is not pretentious, it comes from the heart and is real as it gets.Make Million Music presents Mista Mal on the Sneaker Pimp Tour
