About Me

This is my attempt at a bio. My name is Dead Eye, but I go by Jon Garber. They call me Dead Eye because I'm blind in one eye, not because im a marksmen on the mic. I write raps, I tattoo, and I paint quite a bit. I guess I'm an artist, although I feel weird about proclaiming myself as one. I grew up in Saginaw, Michigan... moved to florida, moved to hawaii, moved back to florida up the east coast then to phoenix, and quite a few places in between. I was really bored in school, so I stopped going. Hip Hop and life experience has been my only real education. Goodie mob "soul food", Jeru the Damaja "wrath of the math" and that Black star album changed my life. If you know me personally then you know I'm a truly modest person. If we met once and I didn't talk to you it's not because I think I'm too cool, It's because I'm uncomfortable around people I don't know. If you know me then you know I'm not nearly as serious as my music. I wont front and say I've been writing rhymes since I was sperm, I started writing lyrics around 95' and writing rhymes around 97'. My first experience with writing and performing hip hop was with a seven piece live band called the MIND ADVANCEMENT TEAM. The experience lasted about three years and taught me an incredible amount about music, people, and life in general. We played a lot of shows and toured a little. I recently finished an album produced by my good friend tony love of OUTHOUSE SOUNDS, called Rebel "like rebellion" Without Applause. Some of the material on the album is really dated and I have mixed feelings about my work on the album. I find it incredibly difficult to step outside myself and critique my own art. For the most part I create music for me. I think it's the crux of my sanity and am constantly surprised when people compliment my music. So if you enjoy my art don't be afraid to send a message. Anthony and I are currently working on an album titled Whisky, Love and Gunpowder. Its the first time I've honestly been excited or satisfied with what I'm creating. I think it's going to be our best effort thus far. I listen to all kinds of music at this point in my life. I have the new Drunken Immortals album in my car right now, Hazmat modine, x:144 and sps, madeline peyroux, steely dan, some old ice cube in the c.d. player at work, and ween in my headphones. I have a hard time identifying with any popular music especially rap. Don't get it twisted if Funcrusher Plus was suddenly on every radio station and tv I would still think it was dope as fuck. I don't know if I will be rapping forever.I don't know if I will be rapping next week. I don't believe in the word sellout. I believe in change and I'm starting to believe in myself.
