About Me

For years--since my first year of college really--all I wanted was to study philosophy and get my Ph.D. and be a professor some day. I am one of those odd people who likes to curl up with Heidegger's "Being and Time" on a Saturday afternoon.Well, now I am a professor of religious studies and I love my work and especially my students, but somehow in the middle of becoming a professor I became a writer. The writer part was an accident, and it could never really rival my love for teaching--but it's coming close. So, on the writing side of things, I contribute to lots of publications regularly: a Newsweek/Washington Post panel called "On Faith," NPR's All Things Considered, The Wall Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, Beliefnet...and then I write books, two so far. My third comes out this August (2007), "Killing the Imposter God: Philip Pullman's Spiritual Imagination in His Dark Materials" and my fourth is called "Sex and the Soul," based on a study I did with college students. My first novel (!!) "The Possibilities of Sainthood" comes out in 2008 with FSG.
